Porsche 930 line - passing along a quick ques.
I was asked the question below via email. Not sure. I know the line started in '74, but how far into the 80's (beyond?) did the 930 line go:
"Maybe you can answer a question for me: was the 1989 911 Turbo considered a 930 or was this only earlier versions like 1978...?" |
From what I gather, the car (a 911 turbo 3.0 or 3.3) was always a 930.
In 1986, when the car was re-introduced into the US market, it was called the 911 Turbo (marketing reasons?). Even at this point, official paperwork (window sticker, VIN numbers, etc...) still referred to the car as a 930! |
The earliest turbos were refered to as 930s.
The '80 - '89 are 911 turbos. '75 - '89 are all "Type 930s" to the best of my knowledge. '90 - '94 C2 turbos. '95 - '99 911 twin turbo '00 on are 996. The 911 line is no more. |
Ooh ooh I know this one!!
OK, here's what I read once in Car&Driver about ten years ago: Porsche USA was sued bigtime due to some guy who bought an early 930 and killed himself going too fast around a curve. His wife claims it had too much power (ie. the power came on too suddenly when spooled up), and was inherently unsafe. Due to many other lawsuits similar to this, Porsche stopped US production for those few years, but was not allowed to use the name '930' (or sell the car known as the 930 anymore) as a result of that particular case.
Similar incidents halted the production of the ill-fated 3 wheeler ATV's, but in that case it was a good thing. |
Thanks
:D Knew I could count on you guys...

This doesn't sound right. I know I read somewhere (Bruce Anderson, maybe)that 930 was just the internal type number, and Porsche always marketed it as either Turbo Carrera or just Turbo.
Enthusiasts noticed the VIN started with 930, and the name stuck. Someone back me up here, I know I am not pulling this out of my ass. Tom |
