Hella relay clicking ??? '74 911

Hi all, I'm relatively new so I'm still learning. Would anyone be able to enlighten me as to why the Hella relay behind the dash is clicking in my '74 911. I believe the part is for turn indicators but they work fine. So I'm at a loss, is there more that this noise is trying to alert me to? I read about a very similar noise occurring that is an O2 sensor, but I don't have any dash light that others refer to in later models. They suggest resetting to eliminate noise, how do you do that? I plan on ordering a replacement part soon I hear lighthouse.com is wher to look. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

My guess is it's the relay for the emergency brake warning light and, possibly, the bulb is burnt out. Does your e-brake light come on when you pull up the brake handle and does it blink?

The turn light relay is located directly behind the fuel gauge and is square. If you pull out the fuel gauge, you can reach in and touch it and tell if it's clicking. If so, it may be faulty even though the turn signals work properly.

Yes all indicators, emergency flashers and E-brake indicator are illuminating and making ticking noise that normally accompanies. By the way when I first noticed the mystery noise it was approximately 3-4 sec. apart, they have consistently become closer together and now are 1 sec apart at most. Which again sounded like symptom described in an O2 sensor issue. Does a '74 have an O2 sensor? I have also read about a clicking reminder to check or adjust valves (every 15,000mi).

Oh I forgot thanks for the input. I did pull the gauges to check however with the after market steering wheel things were tight. I could access it much easier from under the hood. Thanks again.

74 does not have an 02 sensor.

Just to be clear, then, you are certain the clicking is coming from the turn signal relay?

Yes I'm certain, I had my hand on it and definitely felt it and when I disconnected it the clicking stopped. But I am confused (but happy) that nothing seems to be malfunctioning, just a clicking noise that has become more frequent. Thanks for the clarification about the O2 sensor or rather lack there of, I was guessing it did not have one.

Mine has done this once but quit. There are some threads on this... but I'll have to search around.

I'm not sure this relates, but a friend's Subaru Outback had the same problem recently--the continual clicking from the turn signal relay for about a week. Then suddenly smoke erupted from the steering column. Looks like the turn signal switch had shorted, possibly from a grease bridge made up of lube material and metal shavings from years of wearing of the contacts.

Like I said, I'm not sure about this but it might be something to look into.

Mine was clicking for a while. I removed the relay and noticed that one of the contacts was burnt. I cleaned the contacts and the clicking stopped. I suspect I need a new turn signal relay. Dirty contacts do funny things.

Ah yes, I remember the thread. Here is Mr. Walker pointing out that it is the master cylinder pressure switch that is sticking or has dirty contacts causing relay clickage.

Flasher Relay Keeps Clicking

Only negative to unplugging it would be no warning light on dash if partial hydraulic failure occurs.

Clicking stopped.

Don't know why, but I'm glad.
