New Targa

Just saw the workings of the new Targa top from the Detroit auto show press conference. Pretty sweet for those of us that enjoy the targa lifestyle.

Certainly a lot more complicated than twisting two levers, hoisting and folding a top, but very nice. If the funds were available, I'd certainly love to have one.

Sweet! Does it still remove manually and store in the front trunk?

I liked it until I saw how the (automatic) top operates. Ridiculous.

Argh!!! I was going to look at them but I'm scared of these super complex tops! My buddy with a 996 convertible won't put the top down because it stopped working right (doesn't always open or close fully), and he's taken it to Porsche 3 times. I'm sure it will be fine for 5 years or so, but I keep my cars way longer.

I just wonder how much weight that mechanized top adds. Why can't they just make a simple, folding removable top? Do they really think we're all that lazy?

Why yes

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The adult obesity rate so far in 2013 is 27.2%, up from 26.2% in 2012, and is on pace to surpass all annual average obesity rates since Gallup-Healthways began tracking in 2008

Well, who do you think makes up the market for new 6-figure Porsches? Not you and me. If Porsche made a targa that sells for 100k+ that required the old geezer who buys these things to remove and fold up the top himself, they'd never sell one. Cars at this level of luxury HAVE to have everything automatic and convenient. Plus, the people that buy cars this expensive can afford to never own one after the warranty expires, so they'll trade it in on something else long before they ever have to deal with a malfunctioning top.

I had to watch the video a few times to understand how it works. I think it is awesome. There is nothing else like it out there.

Maybe they will make a "classic" version. You must show proof of previous stewardship of an original Targa to qualify :-)

Problems with the top mechanism caused me to sell my 87 cabriolet. Other than some water leaks, I've been quite happy with my Targa's and 914-6s.

Simplicity is nice, but we may have to wait for Porsche to come up with a folding carbon fiber top in an upcoming RS version. ;-)

Nevertheless, I do like the looks of this new model Targa.

How can I make something as complicated and heavy as possible, and loose the rear seats at the same time. I guess the current Porsche buyer can't stop, get out of the car, and remove the roof and store it.

And I don't think it looks good either.

Oh that's cool! Reminds me of why I'm drawn to the Targa over a Coupe. Spring is just around the corner boys...
