Fan Housing Cracked, Anyone Have a Used One?
What I thought was an alternator with bad bearings, turns out to be a fan housing full of cracks that the dreaded previous owner tried to fix with several tubes of epoxy. So, does anyone know where I might find a used 3.2 fan housing? (A new one is $476.00!!) And while I am waiting for one, what is the worst that can happen if I keep driving the car with the old housing? I loosened up the fan strap bolt to take some pressure off the cracked housing. I also loosened up the fan belt, but not to the point it is slipping. Thanks for any and all advice.

Kurt,
If you can clean off the epoxy with aircraft paint stripper, use a Dremel cutter to widen the cracks to a 'V' shape ... then I believe the housing can be MIG-welded and be usable again. The welder should be told it is Magnesium.

Kurt,
I had the same problem and mine was welded by a local shop with no problem. The welder mentioned that it was a mix of metal but had no problems and it has lasted for over 3 years and cost $20 or so to fix. It was turned around and fixed (with an alternator overhaul) in half a day... Joe

I have a mig welder and am not half bad with it. What wire would you use to weld the housing? Steel? Aluminum? Do they even make a magnesium alloy welding wire?

Kurt,
Not a clue on the rod, and I have done my fair share of welding as well. When mine was done they said that it was a mix of metal and not just pure magnesium but not sure. On a "interesting" metal like this I would at a minimum take it to a welding shop and ask them, and for the $20 I was charged in my case it was well worth it, especially should I have tried it and made a mess of it! The dreaded PO did not touch the alternator or fan housing on your 86 Carrera. Maybe the PPO did. And if you want to discuss epoxy, do you have stock in JBWeld? I am still scraping it off all imaginable places on the 72!
