Porsche Crest Does the "S" denote 2L S Rods?

I have a set of 901.103.101.0R rods all with an "S" in white marked on them. Does this denote 2L S rods?

Yes, The large S painted on the rods denotes S engine part.

Does that simply mean they were used by the factory as a part of an S engine build or are they materially different from a standard connecting rod having part number 901.103.101.0R?

Early 911S rods were further processed by soft nitrating.

If you don't have a copy of Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook", get it. In many of this website's tech forums, the responses for important, critical information may vary from incorrect to factual and opinions in-between. You might want better assurances for confirmation. BTW, S con rods are NLA.

Photos and description show the difference between 2,0-2.4 liter S and non-S con rods.

Anderson says S rods are beefier and nitrided (darker, black finish).

Think for a minute. Porsche assigns the same part number on different parts, then uses non-permanent, hand-written white paint to further differentiate them.

Sherwood,
The 2 liter S rods shown were not beefier than standard period rods, just nitrated.
The 2.2 liter rods had reinforced big ends.
