LED Turn signal indicators?
Are there LEDs for the turn signals indicators on the dash?
|
If I recall correctly, the LED kit from pelican Etarga (sold through this board) comes with two LEDs for the turn signals...
|
Great, thanks.
|
The kit from etarga does NOT come with leds for the turn signals. Apparently they mess up the timing.
|
I posted about led turn signals.

I did mine with a couple superbrightled.com LED's. You need to add a small resistor across the socket wires. Only needed the resistor on one. Now I can see the indicator on the dash with the targa top off in daylight.
BTW, OP seemed to be talking about the indicators in the dash, vs the outside signals. Is there a standard nomenclature to differentiate the two? |
I think nomenclature would be: turn signal indicators vs turn signals.
Okay, I found out that the kit I ordered does not have the indicator bulbs because Porsche changed the design of the bulb. So I would like to know if the superbrightled mentioned, would work for my car? Here is a picture of the bulb from my dash turn signal indicator. http://www.bytephoto.com/photopost/d...edium/bulb.jpg |
Yep, that's the one I have. It's a 74 wedge LED. Search on their site with the car specifier and it will come up. Pick the green color, assuming that's the color of the indicators.

You will have to tell me how to add the resistor and do I get the resistor at the same site? Can you give me a part number for the led and resistor? |
I'm traveling at the moment, so I don't have the exact value. If you have a multimeter, use it to read the resistance (in Ohms) of the bulb you have and get one that is approximately the same value. Other option is to go to radio shack and get the lowest resistance one you can find. I soldered it across one of the sockets, the two ends of the resistor bridging the two wires that go into the socket, The polarity of the LED matters too, so it will only work one of the two ways it can go into the socket. An incandescent
bulb has no polarity, so it does't matter. I'm home on friday if you want an exact value (or someone with an EE background might jump in) |

Etarga has stated that he doesn't make the plug-n-play LED's for the turn indicators.
You could try the Superbrights, if they make them. I haven't read too many good things about them on the LED threads though. Another solution might be to replace the existing bulbs with new OEM ones, and change out the green cellulose too. There have been a few postings where just replacing the old stock bulbs have brightened things up sufficiently. |

I've only done it before on an old Ford, so I can't speak with P-car experience.
Taking the old speedo apart in the Ford was simple, and didn't involve peeling back the black bezel like a Porsche. The green cellulose was simply taped with small strips of masking tape onto the back of the speedo face. Sorry I can't be of more help. |
Maybe someone will come to the rescue and let me know how difficult it was to take apart to check out the cellulose.
|
I'll take a picture of what I did tomorrow when I'm home. My guess is it's easier to go the LED route than taking apart the tach to change out 30 year old cellulose that might crumble.
Really was't that hard, and works very well for me. The bulb (LED) type is 74 wedge. I'll get the resistor type as well. Also the flasher option is an easy solution as well also - as in the thread ClickClickBoom linked to. The one other point I would make is the bulb holders for the wedge type bulbs are NLA and have been superseded. They are also pretty fragile. I FUBARED mine and had to replace it withe superseded part that required a good bit of McGyvering to get it to work. Point being, if you really want to make the upgrade, be sure you're comfortable with things not going exactly the way you want. |
