Ok this is not a question about crankcase sealants, valve lash or other techno-squabble. How the #$%@!!! do I get the cover off the muffler (muffler thingy?) so I can paint it. No references in any of my manuals.

Not sure what you mean by muffler thingy, but if you are talking about the valance panel, (body colored piece of sheetmetal that hides the muffler) it screws into the bottom of the bumper.
The muffler is bolted to the cat with 3 bolts, and hung with 2 metal straps. If this isn't what you are talking about, you need to elaborate a bit. Hope this helps. Tom |

Nope,
Just the short pipe cover (3-4 inches) that covers the muffler outlet pipe outside the valence panel. Thanks for the reply to the cryptic description.

You mean the muffler tip. (?) Pull while twisting (use heavy gloves)

Muffler tip, thank you.
Already tried that, even used large channel locks (figuring I'm going to paint the thing anyway), and heating with a torch. Any other suggestions?

You may be able to break it loose if it isn't pushed too far back. The first time I took one off I put a 2x4 flat against the open face, and smacked the board with a big hammer. This got it unstuck. Then the gloves and twist-pull.

Yet another reason to have a nice S.S. muffler. You can eliminate the pesky "muffler thingy". I could never budge the one on my old OEM muffler. I'd guess most folks would just Dremel it off and buy a new one.

Hey Doug,
You are sending me some SCWDP stickers I ordered. Is there a midwest chapter? Most SCs have rusted away by now.

Stickers were mailed on Aug 30. Enjoy.
I don't know who our Mid-West chapter President is. It might as well be you!

Doug,
Do I need to send my curriculum vitae, or how about OK if my wife lets me take on yet another responsibility. I can imagine the pressure with jetting here and there to spread the word. Count me in!

I have two almost new black "muffler thingies" with nasty scrapes from steep driveways in my box o parts. The brandnew one that came with the SS muffler, I imediately took off and gave away. You get tired of dealing with them if you car is lowered at all.
