easy valve adj. quesi
I have read the tech article regarding valve adj.
I have adj. plenty of valves before, although not for some years. I don't consider it a difficult or scary job. I was not intending to change the oil at the same time. So when I remove the lower valve cover do I expect a torrent of oil. Or will it be a continued dripping while the covers are off. Should I just drain the sump and then top up with new oil. If I drain the sump, will it continue to drip anyway. Basically, what sort of mess should I be prepared for? Jeff 911T |

I always change the oil when I do the valves, but I know that if you raise up the side of the car you're working on, it will just drip a little when you pull the cover. If you leave it level, expect a fair amount of oil to be dropped. Half a quart, tops.
I would not drain the sump and top it up afterwards, though - that leaves no oil in the case. I suppose it might be OK to do it, but why risk it? I'd just change the oil regardless. Cars like it when you do that.

just drain the engine case into a clean pan and put it back in when you're done. it's a pain to tip the car, and just do one side at a time. plenty of leakage if it's level, without draining it. the engine doesn't use the oil that's already in the sump for lubrication, it uses oil from the tank, so no harm draining it. you will still need a drip pan because it will drool a bit even with the oil out.
