question: vin numbers and the 1981 911SC

after reading the following post, I was left hanging...Sc Number Question?

so in 81 they made a change to the vin numbers according to Simon's Vin page at Simon's Porsche 911 SC Site . From the forum thread above, I was left with the idea that early run cars in 81 had WPOZZZ chassis vins near gas tank with windshield pillar WPOAAO. Anyone have any more info on this?

Thanks!!

Back than they all had WPOZZZ on the chassis by the gas tank.

Once they find out where the car was going, the ZZZ was replace by 3 letters (required for the North American market) on the windshield pillar & door jam VIN.

ROW car have ZZZ on all 3 VIN markers

And the three ZZZ are a PITA to explain to an American insurance company.

thanks for the input...this threw me for a loop. When I picked up this project 81', i checked the vin on the pillar and in the door and glanced under the hood and the but really only looked at the last four or five digits. It wasnt until I had the car home and was going thru things that I found the WPOZZZ at the gas tank. I could have smacked myself at first, I thought I might have made a bad mistake with this purchase. After examining the available serial numbers it seems the ROW Coupes have a '0' in Digit 13 while USA models have a '2' in Digit 13. For the Targas, the ROW cars have a '4' and USA has a '6'

so my tank says WPOZZZ91ZBS120640 (going from memory here) while the Pillar says WP0AA0917BS120640 as does the door sticker. So only the digits contining a 'Z' are different.

If not there is something wrong like a re-built car.

Here is a good link: Porsche VIN decoder - Stuttcars.com
