1974 or 1975 Targa ?....or both
Hi,
I checked the numbers for my Targa yesterday, I've had this car for two years now. The engine number by the fan says 6140889 and the chassisnumber is 9115110971. Does this mean that the engine originally belonged to a 74-model and the chassis to a 75-model ? I have got one of Peter Morgans books and from what I can see these numbers are not "matching numbers"... can I be 100% sure of that? Lovely car though.. ![]() |

You appear to be correct. Check the engine type number next to the engine number. The type 911/92 will verify that it is a '74 engine 2.7 liter 150 hp motor.
BTW, the 74 motor is better than the 75's. The 75 originally came with thermal reactor exhaust manifolds and the combination of undercooling the engine with the 5 blade fan and the increased heat from these pollution control reactors, caused the engines to run hot and the studs holding the cylinders to the cases caused the engine to fail. Quite possibly what happened to the original engine from your car.

Thanks for the answer Tony,
I've checked, the engine is 911/92. I guess the fact that it is a 74-engine "gives med the right" to order the "2.7 badge" to put on the engine cover. I read somewhere that this badge was gone for the 75 - 77 models. Anyway, this car has lived in Germany up to 2006 when a German doctor took it to Norway. The engine had a major service in Germany in 2002 and has run 30 K miles since then. The bad working thermal reactors were only a US emission thing ? First California cars from 75 and then all over US for the year 77 ? |
