installing 3 liter in a 76 911 and california smog rules
 

i recently bought a 76 911S with no engine. i would like to install a 3 liter engine from 78-83 SC. i understand that i will have to get it certified by a california smog referee. has anyone done this? what problems should i expect? is there something published by california that i can refer to? thanks, gary

ps--i am worried about spending a whole bunch of money on a 3 liter engine and then finding myself not being able to smog the car.

If it is visually similar and has the correct hose routing they won't be able to tell the difference. The only thing to worry about is if it will pass the test.

If they were able to tell it was different the rules are that it must be able to pass the smog for the year the engine was manufactured. That would still be easy as you will still have the CIS on it.

Better to not let them know and go someplace where they don't know Porsches.

It is the visual inspection that you have to worry about most.
The EGR routing might be challenging when they compare to what they have in the book (computer) - The good news is you already will have the tank ventilation, etc - you should buy an engine from a CA car, get all the parts,
Then the tests on the dyno
The NOX will likely be the most difficult, and then CO and HC

Going to a ref is easy, but very time-consuming, and you will have an annoying BAR sticker (although valuable) - I have gone through it before.
The bad news is you won't be able to play with Webers, exhaust, aftermarket EFI, etc.

ok here's my current thinking--get a 78 or 79 SC engine. it looks just like 76 w the smog pump . only difference i think would be catalytic converters instead of dreaded thermo reacters. that is assuming my car was calif car and not a 49 state car (the latter of which i think had CVs). there is a sticker on my car that says "noncatalyst" which i think then means a calif car. if it doesnt pass visual then back up will be i go and get conformance sticker which i think i s/b able to get. any comments?

1976= thermal reactor exhaust in California/ non cat.
1976= primary resonator in 49 states/ non cat.
Visual inspection does happen in California, along with the chassis roller test.
1975 is the magic year for no testing cut-off.
