jack stand recommendation

81 sc owner seeks brand of good quality jackstands that will allow plenty of height and stability, as well as ease of use.

Thanks

12 ton from harbor freight! They are insanely heavy duty and if or when the time comes for an engine drop, youll be happy to have them.

Harbor freight! And the jack from Costco! The jack is heavy but you only have to lift it once!

I recently bought some stuff from Hein Werner. 2-ton jack and a pair of their jackstands. Made in America, and certainly higher quality than the not-Made-in-America stuff I've used in the past.

These flat top stands are the best I've ever used:

And the best jack I've ever owned is an AC Hydraulic, sold below the jack stands on the same page.

Craigs Lists..... I found 6 Ton jack stands and lots of other tools in my search for jack stands. It seems like people are just moving tools as later generations have low interest in wrenching.

I forget where I got these, but what I was looking for was a set that ratcheted into position, and also had a safety lockout. I like to be able to actuate them with only one hand under the car, and I don't trust the ones that only have the ratchet mechanism.

I did a lot of research on this topic last year. I found that Harbor Freight had very high ratings for jacks and stands.

I also like the Esco stands that Dave posted the link to. They've got three legs for stability on uneven ground and a locking pin for adjustability and not ratchets. And they're available in both flat top and a cradle that works with torsion tubes and such.

This is just a off story but I had the roll pin in the orange (HF) 6 ton jack stand fail. After taking it apart and replacing I got a good look at the castings and the fit of the cog. Had to grind the piece for a solid correct fit in the support notch as it was only catching a small corner of the cog in addition to the failed pin. Have a look for your self.

I've been beyond pleased with the jack stands from JackPoint. Unconventional compared to everyone else's recommendations but they solve the eternal problem of simultaneous use of jacking/supporting points. I have a conventional set and the JackPoint stands in my garage, use depending on the situation.

Very nice indeed, however the $700 price tag for a pair makes you think twice before pulling the trigger.
I like the options for different cars though... Maybe for next Christmas.

I have been happy with the Harbor Freight 12 stands. Costco also carried a set that were 12t and chromed. I have had them for 10 years and they have been great. The added height is very useful for an engine drop.

Question Jack stands part II

I have an 81 sc. Purchased with engine and tranny already out. I want to lift the back of the car up onto jack stands, but without the engine in I don't know how to go about it. It seems pretty dicey to lift one side of the entire car with the slot for the Porsche jack under the door, place a jackstand on that side's torsion bar, lower it, and do the same on the other side; repeating 'til it's the height I want. Maybe it's just my Scottish sensibilities, but it seems a lot could go wrong using that technique.

There has to be a better way - please inform!

I did that by placing a 4x4 across the bottom of the car and jacking the centre of that. then lowered the torsion bar ends onto jack stands

Those look like the 6 ton versions of the 12 ton Torin Big Red stands that I bought from Northern Tool.

Another vote for the Torin stands which have the locking pin - I much prefer this locking mechanism.
