C2 gas smell
other than the filler pipe replacement and new gas cap, what has anyone found what fixed the smell in the front trunk area mostly. C2/C4 seem to have a real elusive problem with this. it's certainly nothing obvious.

Here are some complete guesses:
rubber fuel tank sender gasket? rubber filler neck/tank hose coupler? overflow tank/hose? tank/pump return/supply fuel lines? foam/rubber tank-to-body seal material? -Eric [This message has been edited by freefly (edited 09-06-2001).] |

Just run a gas heater in front, that should burn off some of those fumes...  |

I've also heard that the front trunk carpet can hold a lot of the smell. If you've fixed all the obvious and still have the smell, maybe it's time to throw the carpet in the washer. Just a thought.

I'm betting you've seen this...but just in case. I pulled this from the service bulliten....common problem on C2's:
ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician Models Affected: 911 C2/C4 all 911 Turbo 1991-on Concern: If a customer complaint of fuel odor is reported, first check all connections on the fuel tank, filler pipe and cap for tightness and proper sealing. Pressurizing the fuel tank with approximately 3 PSI and using an electronic hydrocarbon detector will find very small leaks which may be possible on the top of the filler neck or on the hose connections. If the fuel filler pipe shows signs of leakage in these areas, it must be replaced |

Just a hint:
Doesn't all US -at least the california- cars after ca. '75 came with a charcoal cannister to trap fumes? On my 90's Opel, the replacement of the cannister (cartridge in this car) was recommended every 50thousend miles or so. I read a dealer's notice once that this would be the first thing to check if any customer complains about fuel smell should arise... Jens |

March '94 Porsche service
bulletin. Damage Code #2007 50 0002: R&R Fuel Filler Pipe 30TU. -Need to replace pipe w/ 964 201 043 06 and hose # 964 201 043 03 (if needed). The original neck has a faulty flange close to the top that can let the smell out. The new neck has a larger flange. The parts are about $40 each at rennlist.com Hope this helps |
