After pulling out the window winder on the passenger side (turns out that it was the switch after all) and cleaning and relubing everything, I decided to do the drivers side as well. The inside of the winder mechanism is really dry and I wondered if it can be disassembled. It looks as if the plastic housing opposite the metal gear can screw off but after trying a few times I'm not sure if it is really tight or screwed on and I am scared of breaking it.
Anyone have any experience that can help me out? BTW I decided to open up the passengers side again so I can swap the motors - should have done some forward planning huh ![]() |

David..not sure what 911 you have..I think you are asking about the window regulator which can be torn down and upgraded with a new stronger center spring pivot..your regulator may have the "weak" design..the pivots should cost around $30-$35 each..if an old weak one fails the window falls in its track...not a pro, but I did a complete regulator/motor/full seal upgrade on my humble 911.....big bucks........Ron

oh, forgot to mention that I also did a auto lock install which cost about $50 each door without the beeper..my Viper alarm system came with the beeper..the hardest part of the job is getting started and snakeing wires from the doors to body.....Ron

Thanks for the reply. I have an '88 Carrera coupe (forget to tell this - late night) The part I am trying to strip is the black plastic unit that screws onto the top of the motor and houses the large nylon gear that meshes with the worm on the motor shaft. And I sympathise with snaking wire hassles - Pulled new speaker wires through and was about to congratulate myself when I saw that the grommet on the door pulled out so now it is off with the door! ![]() |

David...never took motor apart..and if you have plastic door lock arm control they are a weak spot..some suggest to have an extra one around..I added some sound deadner to door skin to give a heavier feel to sound of door closing..I used Dynamat, but some stuff called "brown bread" is just as good and much cheaper.....Ron

Thanks - I tried a few times and it all seems to be glued together so I cleaned it out as well as I could and then stuffed everything full of grease. And BTW the right and left doors winders are NOT interchangeable. I discovered this by experience - another bright idea that cost me a few hours stripping down and reassembling ![]() Now I'm going to remove the door so I can replace the grommet that pulled out when I pulled new speaker wires through But I'm not complaining - I'm learning a lot and its good relaxion Keep well David |
