Alignment without tires

Today I left my car at a specialist for alignment. He did it for $170, and now the car does not pull to the right anymore, so I am glad. But I was surprised to notice that the tires seem to have been removed to do that (there was mounting liquid around the four rims). Is that common practice to remove the tires for an alignment ? I did not have a chance to ask the mechanic since I picked the car after hours...

Alignment

Oftentimes they will rotate the tires. Naturally, if the rears
are different sizes this won't happen. During the alignment
process a variety of devices are attached to the rim of each
wheel. I suspect that the alignment specialist was just perhaps
washing the dirt and grime off your tires and rims that he left
on them during the process.

alignment

Forgot to mention that perhaps it's possible the technician
had difficulty attaching the alignment gig to each rim. Therefore
requiring the de-inflation of each tire.
