yeah Shawn, you got the VOM correct..and Warren thru the info around about the Beru plug connectors..and that they may be OK when cold but NOT OK when hot...I always take Warren seriously...................Ron

thrown_hammer 10-08-2002 05:08 AM

I just did the math and the pump flow was 900cc in 30 seconds. So on to the plugwires! They are new and steel braided but you never know.

yeah, can't discount those Berus..I'd crack up if Warren got this one solved................Ron

thrown_hammer 10-08-2002 05:23 AM

If he is right I will... I don't know what I will do. But it will be fun!:D

RoninLB 10-08-2002 05:29 AM

Warren didn't say that's your problem..but from his other posts I figure he would consider it a possibility...........................Ron

RoninLB 10-08-2002 05:35 AM

I don't know how you would test those Berus when engine hot......Ron

Okay,
I went out and pulled the plug wires one at a time. The connecters on the dizzy end seemed a little loose. So I tightened them up. The coil wire was the worst. I went for a drive yesterday. Once again an improvment but not a cure. I think I am fighting multiple demons here.
After reading a thread about changing your muffler and having the same symptoms as me, I richened the mix about 45 degs.(1/8 of a turn) Drove it today it runs worse which in my illogocal way of thinking says it is still a spark issue and not fuel. I will try to borrow a volt meter this week and check the wires that way.
It would be cool if all you guys could just show up at my house at the same time. We would have this fixed in an afternoon.:D

I just talked to Chris Metzger. He has a factory 2 into 1 muffler he is going to let me try to see if the muffler I have is causing any of this. The muffler on the car is the Bursch 3M which is designed for the MFI cars. Just one more variable I can eliminate.

Just fixed my friends 930 with identical symptoms. Good running at low rpm BAD at high rpm and load. Front fuel pump not running. Also same symptoms as my old volvo(CIS) Could not get high rpm under any load, fuel pump passed flow test and pressure test in the car. The main pump was the problem; found when I removed it from the car, hooked it up to a high pressure guage, it only developed 120psi at no flow(should be over 200psi ). Replaced it with a real Bosch(I have found no aftermarket fuel pumps which develop enough preasure) and it ran great. An indication in both cases were strange noises from the main pump.

I saw that this morning. It's worth a try. I saw someone else put on a GHL dual out and had the same problem I have. So I will try to rule out the muffler.

ENGINE PROBLEMS

TRY THIS:
FIND THE FUEL RETURN LINE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND BEND IT SO THAT IT IS BLOKED UP.
THEN GO FOR A TEST DRIVE.
THIS HELPED ME TO FING PROBLEMS WITH MY 911SC.

THANKS, HAROLD

thrown_hammer 10-14-2002 04:07 AM

Okay,
I put on the factory muffler Saturday and went for a drive. Same problem. The car does seem to have more midrange grunt though.
I rechecked the timing at idle and at 6000 RPM. Both are in spec.

Harold, What would blocking off the fuel return hose do? Wouldn't that make it worse? (I don't need worse.;) )

Ed, I only have one fuel pump.

Maybe I should just sell the car on E-bay and get e Turbo.:(

69911e 10-14-2002 05:23 AM

The one fuel pump you have is the high pressure one, still should be tested. If you plug off the return you could develop >200psi in the whole system(unless your puel pump has an internal relief valve), I don't think the system is designed to take it.

Here are my current thoughts.
1) Fuel pump, tested and good for flow and pressure.
2) Dizzy, new cap rotor and points.Vac advance varified thru 6K timing check.
3) timing, good at idle and 6K
4) factory muffler, replaced Bursch.
5) CD box replaced with a known working box.
6) plug wires, new braided. connections good.
7) plugs, new NGK R, text book brown paper bag look.
8) vac leaks tested with carb cleaner on running engine.none found
9) new fuel filter
10) new air filter
11) new flamethrower coil
12) new injectors
13) cleaned screen in bottom of the fuel tank
14) mech. tested and varified WUR working

I am beginning to suspect the fuel distributor. If anyone would like to come over and troubleshoot the electrical side PLEASE come over. Otherwise I will tear apart the fuel distributor and see what I can see.

Shawn,

I feel your pain, man. I was at wit's end until my mechanic thought of changing the muffler -- I was ready to sell the car, and that surprised a lot of people, including me!

All I can say is hang tough. The cause is staring you right in the face. Promise.

I pulled the 14 pin connector last night and took a brass wire brush to it. This morning the hesitation seemed to be gone. I will verify that after work. As this AM it was 34 degrees and the car wasn't warmed up.
Is that light I see at the end of the tunnel? I won't hold my breath...:(

Bobboloo 10-15-2002 10:56 AM

Shawn I just read your thread and was going to suggest you clean your electrical connectors. It seems you've already come to the same idea. Besides the 14 pin you might want to also clean the CDI connector.

After work I went for a little drive. I couldn't do a third gaer redline run, but I did get first and second. It pulled all the way to redline in both gears.
It seems to pull like crazy from 3000 to 5000 RPM then taper off a bit to redline. But there is no hesitation. Does this seem about right? I have nothing to base this on. Any CIS 2.7 guys wanna verify this? I think I may be out of the woods...;)
