Do the model numbers have any meaning?

May be silly question but do the 911 model numbers have any meaning? They seemed somewhat sequential up until the 991. For example 964,993,996,997...991?

Just curious.

Thanks

Numbers

They were simply running out of numbers beginning with the number 9! Probably trying to fill in some previously unused numbers in the 900 series.

Originally, the model numbers coincided with the Porsche Engineering project number. The 911 we know today was originally called the 901, but Peugeot got their panties in a bunch over the 0 in the middle position as that was their way of naming their models.

Think of how many projects Porsche did between 356 and the 901 (911)...

They call everything a 911... and Carrera... since 84, if the engine is in that back pretty much.
