The 911 sat on jackstands in the garage for a long time. I enjoy the work, but only worked on the car when I felt like it. After it was taking longer than expected, I simply declared it to be a two-year project, and I was right on schedule.
I later revised it to a three-year project, and ended up being right on schedule once again. Big help to have the car at home, in a large, brightly-lit garage. Makes it easy to spend just a few minutes sometimes. |
Not having a schedule helps me! I am just working on it when I can with no real timeline. I am making progress, but if I had a timeline and wasn't meeting it, then I would be disappointed in myself. Not having a timeline really removes that anxiety.
By the way, next to it in the garage, I am finishing up my 1971 VW Tin Top Westy. It is still not done, but it is driveable, and, therefore, enjoyed. |
I've got a white board I put up to five tasks on, each task not lasting longer than two hours. I put a lift in my garage so I can just leave one of the cars there and get back to it without having to re prep everything.

I have even less time than I did before now that my son is 16m old and super mobile. He has shown great interest in what happens out in the garage, which I think is pretty cool. |
Go with the flow.
There are no deadlines on projects, and I bought a car for the specific purpose of working on it. My effort and schedule waxes and wanes with my mood and the seasons. When I'm working on the car, I buy a lot of tools and parts. When I'm not, my bank account grows. I weigh the time vs money of a particular task, how annoying it is, when I want the car drivable, and decide who will do the work. So far, I've found that what has saved me the most money by far is not having an empty space in the garage. I've seen people lose $60k in a day like that... |
Awesome thread. Good advices and interesting experiences.
At present I can only work on my 911 on Saturday mornings, it is my escape, a need, I look forward to it all week and then time flies when I am working on it. I run my own business, I have a wife, a 24 years old son and a 5 year daughter. Time is a scarce commodity, so I have a list of things to fix or improve on the car, I sort it by priority and do a lot of planning/preparation ahead.
