Steering wheel advice

I have a 85 Targa and my steering wheel is starting to show it's age. For what it would cost to have it recovered I could got a Momo Prototipo. My car is a weekend driver. All things considered, which way would you go?

I like originality so I would recover the original.

What the rest of the car looks like? Perhaps the momo fits other mods done.

Original, used wheel.

The Momos are usually too small of a diameter to be really functional. If you can find a large wheel (370-380mm) then maybe I'd be more excited.

Look here and decide what look you want. Show me (please) your steering wheels!

I replaced my wheel with the 930s unit from our host. Fantastic! It looks right because it was used in our very same interior.

I agree. The only current production (and therefore semi-affordable) wheel in the larger sizes that I found was the 370mm Abarth. Since I dislike the look of the factory wheels, the Abarth is what is now on my car.

I don't know...I run a 350 prototipo on my '85 m491. What kind of issues do you guys encounter?

FWIW, I just bagged and boxed the original wheel for the future.

I realize Momos and Prototipos are popular but I've purchased two 911s that came with Momos and the first thing I did was to sell the aftermarket wheel and replace with factory original. Mostly for the size but I like the original look better. I wish the 930S wheel had a bit larger diameter, though - good looking steering wheel.

no joke... adding my Prototipo - coupled with the Zuffenhaus hub extender - was probably the single biggest improvement I've made to my car

maybe a tie w/ headers?

but the point is... it made the feel of driving the car incredibly awesome

The grip diameter rules, the overall diameter is no where even near approaching too small (promotes a righteous drive-from-shoulder-blades experience, and turning my 255/18s is a non-issue), it's a timelessly classic style (not sure what other mods it would need to 'match'?)... and the hub extender was simply EXACTLY what the car needed (I'm 6foot).

The extender gets my finger tips off the edge of the dash top, and my knees out of the friggen knee bolster. And the view from behind the Prototipo is just amazing... I sometimes just sit in there and stare .

I found the stocker outright offensive looking. Straight horizontal monospoke horn button, skinnyminny grip, ginormous diameter... right off a '70s Oldsmobuick? Definitely wasn't my bag.

Only complaint if there is one is it does obscure the gauges more worserer than the OE one does - hence the clocking...

My $0.02, hope it helps your decision...

Well Paul, this is something we agree on 100% (I know you'll sleep better now ) - the OEM steering wheel is a genuine abomination - hard to believe that someone designed that, stepped back, and said "cool"!

In my case, I'd have to rate the Seine shifter and Coupler Whisperer bushings higher than my steering wheel. But the steering wheel was a nice improvement.

Yes, steering wheels are very personal. I dislike both of the later stock wheels. The horn pad on the three-spoke wheel that came on my car looked like something that should have come on a kiddie car - cheap looking hard plastic with no style.

I'm sure that the 350mm wheels drive fine, but I prefer to be able to see my gauges without clocking them. The 370mm Abarth with a JWest eccentric spacer is nearly perfect. For me, that is. Other people may not feel the same.

Arne..that Abarth looks pretty flat, no? Is it? Regardless, it may have just become my 2nd favorite wheel - behind the 'tipo

+1 I have the Abarth along with the Zuffenhaus hub and JWest eccentric. -J

Little bit of dish. Couple centimeters maybe. I think if you laid a bare wheel on a flat surface you might could get your fingers under it. -J

2nd - that's a mighty fine looking wheel. Looks like it's got some nominal dish, not flat but not as much as the Prototipo. Awesome gut colors too.

Great idea on the eccentric hub! Wish my extender had that.

I definitely don't like basically any other Momo wheel in these cars. Too aftermarket looking.

Yeah, clocking isn't ideal. You get used to it might quick like, as I don't really use the <20 / >140 ranges of the speedo, my tach has my shift point @ high noon, and the oil gauge only requires a slight canter.

Alas, the benny's of the wheel far outweighed clocking (to me). The driving experience is so very altered with sooooo much goodness...

My shifter could def use some werk ... Wevo on the pretend world to-do list... sigh...

I'm running the JWest eccentric on the same hub you have. Works great. Pics in this thread. -J

What size steering wheel do you have

Paul, you don't like the Mod 7 (alcantra) or Mod 8 (leather)? It looks almost the same as the Prototipo that you have but is very deep dished - no need for the bazooka hub extender then.

It has a very slight dish, about the same as a Prototipo. Fairly flat.

I looked for an Abarth but could not find one at the time ; other similar wheels eg 911R were silly expensive. The Momo Retro is smaller than the Abarth , but so far I've had no problems with it . Nothing than a stern hand couldn't deal with
