Stainless early sport Muffler

Hi All,

I have one of these early 911 "stainless" sport mufflers.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1855875835

It sounds great on my 3.2l 914 conversion. The thing that I wonder about is that the muffler is attracted to a magnet. I thought Stainless was a non magnetic metal. Does anyone have the story on this?

thanks Mark

Stainless Steels vary in composition. The amount of chromium is the big player. Generally the less magnetic the more resistant to rust it will be. There are a few interesting threads here on the topic.

BTW $300 starting price (from the ebay ad) on a used 10y/o muffler, that likely has rusted guts, is hardly worth anyones time. . . except the sellers.

EDIT: A good thread on the subject

Thanks Island !

I purchased my Bischoffs much more economically.
I just figured that OE stainless parts would be of very high quality
and was suprised they at least partly failed the magnet test.

best Mark

Mark,

Some of the "stainless" mufflers have a stainless outer shell with baffles made of normal steel, and a magnet will pick up the baffles. Move the magnet around and see if the magnetic feel is stronger as you get close to a baffle and that might be what you are feeling.

You can say it Joe:

The DANSK is stainless on the outside with steel baffles on the inside (it rusts from the inside out).

The stainless portion of the muffler will have some magnetic drag.

Your magnet will stop when it comes near a weld spot where the baffles are located.

Brad,

Never would have known it had you not told me about the baffles! Always wondered why it rusted on part of the muffler then you dropped by you pointed out that on the Dansk the baffles were not stainless.

Type 300 stainless, of which there are additional variations:316, 316L, 304, etc., is non-magnetic. It is also the one most corrosion resistant. Type 400 stainless, is indeed magnetic, and is used by some production manufacturers to cut costs. I can't believe that any manufacturer of mufflers would be cheap enough to use 400 stainless.

Can't help with the muffler question, although I do second the 10 yr old muffler for $300 bing too high.

I am jeolous of your ability to take the P-car down the windward side of the island around the twisties from Kahuku to Kanahoe. There just isn't a more beautiful place in the world IMHO.

Mark,

I don't believe that is a stainless muffler, and it certainly ISN'T a 'sport' muffler! 'Sport' mufflers have two or three outlets.

It is a very good muffler, though, and a hard one to beat!
