what kind of drive shafts do I have?
While (attempting) to replace rear bearings I have taken off the drive shafts and noticed more than one boot could use replacing. The problem is I don't know what boot to buy. The car is a 1972 911T with a 1986 engine and transmission. Wide body, if relevant. I had the conversion done about 12 years ago. So the transmission is 86 and the suspension is 72. I don't know what year the drive shaft and boots are. I have attached pictures.
First question is which boots to buy. I don't see 1972 boots for sale on the host's site, so that may be a clue. Still researching but thought i would throw it out there. Matt ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Is that the key? The number of bolts? Both inner and outer are four bolts.

These look just like my 86 axles. I was under the impression that older models had the stub axles, but maybe not as far back as 72.
Maybe it's just me but it also looks like your axles have 6 bolts and not 4, which would be consistent with your 86 transmission. On the other hand the threaded portion of your axles are drilled to accept a cotter pin, unlike my 86. Could you double check? I just want to make sure you order the right components for your repairs, not doubting the advice you were given here, and getting an education on earlier models myself. ![]()

I questioned another thread where a member suggested it was easier to buy a whole new axle instead of just new CV's and the additional cost. if the axle is good the cv's are easy to clean up. what you've got there might warrant the whole new complete axle combo. if those are cleaned up im bettin there is some significant wear. report back.

The "sixth post" link helped a lot. Attached are a couple pictures. The CV joint is 108 mm. The CV joint itself has 6 through holes but was attached with four bolts. I don't know what to call the "cover" but it has only four holes. Could I have a hybrid because of the 72/86 combo?
I think at this point I will plan on disassembling and inspecting. If I were to make an assumption that the CV joints themselves are still good. Would I be correct is saying my best course of action is to clean, repack and reassemble with new boots? and if so, I just need to know what boots to buy…. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

You may have done this but there are a lot of CV rebuilds threads on here, many in build threads. A LOT of people find in the middle of the process it is much easier and not too expensive to just buy new ones. I would look around.

I'm guessing you have 10mm bolts. The real question is why only 4 bolts in your car. The older CVs had 4 bolts and two roll pins, as seen in the link.
As far as rebuilding them goes, check the price of new axles, before you start. If you clean all your joints and find on bad one, you may as well buy all new. On the older cars, the CVs last for ever and can be repacked with out trouble. The newer cars seem to be much harder on the joints.
