Need new clutch cable?

Hi, I noticed my pedal feel was a bit easier the other day. Specifically the top 1/2 of the travel was very easy and abrupt, like a compound bow getting past the 1/2 mark. So I climbed under the car to adjust the cable. The initial gap was way wider than 1mm so I adjusted it.

Two things: 1) the clutch engagement is now very low and 2) the cutch cable is now resting on the throttle linkage and causing the throttle to stick. If I get under the car I can lift it off but as soon as the clutch is depressed it again rests on the throttle.

So, I'm guessing the clutch cable is now just too stretched and needs to be replaced?

Clutch is brand new car is an 86 carrera.

Thanks.

John

Hey John,

I've been told [?] that the clutch cables hardly ever go.

Keeping it simple, I'd review the adjustment procedure in the 101 projects, and note IF/when the problem re-occurs.

Happy path, nothing happens and your done

Otherwise, you're going down the path to "what-if" land.

One potential failure would be the fork that dis-engages the clutch plate is going, but I would hope that this was checked when the new clutch was put in, and can be ruled out.

Another potential failure would be something wrong with the pedal cluster and/or clutch pedal, but there is a 101 article for this as well.

Hope that this helps.

Hi. The clutch engagement is excellent and smooth. It's just very low. The biggest issue at the moment is the Bowden cable on the throttle linkage causing the sticking throttle. I did the adjustment in the exact way as described in the Bentley and in the same way as I had done before. The fork should be good.

As an aside it's good I was under the car as I saw a wire on the starter solenoid was really loose and in fact the car didn't start after I wiggled it. Tightened back up and off we went.

Arg. User error. I did indeed dork the adjustment. Went back under and did it right this time.
