Lime Rock
Slightly OT, but anyone see that 908 in Martini livery clicking off 58-second laps last weekend? Probably the fastest car there, made mincemeat out of a Ferrari 512S among others. I'll try to post pictures when I get them loaded into the computer.
As an ex-Alfa owner my favorite session of the weekend was the 20-lap practice on Friday in which a Shelby GT350R tried but failed to catch the leading bright yellow 1600cc Alfa TZ. Favorite single-owner equipe had to be the Wang stable of Ferrari 250 GTO, 250 SWB Berlinetta, Ecurie Ecosse Jaguar C-Type, and competition Daytona. One race group had two GTOs and two SWBs in addition to my friend's Giulietta Sprint Veloce. Another had three Lola T70 coupes. Oh, there were some very nicely-prepared 356 and 911 racers there too. I didn't get a program so I don't know whose they were. And a Trans-Am reunion race. Highly recommended event. Worth the ride back home in the rain Sunday.

I was there on Sunday and the weather was not bad. It was the only dry spot in the state. The Trans Am reuinion race was great, but the hilight of the day was the exibition that BMW put on! They were giving hot laps in the M3 GTR's! Oh my God! Those suckers are fast! I have been going to Lime Rock for 30 years and those were the fastest, meanest race cars I have ever seen! BMW was the event sponsor and they did an outstanding job. As an owner of a new 325, I was treated to VIP parking, a hospitality tent and many other perks. I wish Porsche would make a commitment to this event like they did with the Rennsport reuinion last year.

It was good fun. Saw some PCA fellows, but dont know you all by sight..
I was there on Saturday, poking around the parking lot was worth the $20. Lotus', Trans-Am cars, vintage club racers, the 908! Most excellent. |

Hey David, I was there on Fri. also. I kept an eye
out for your blue K75, but didn't see it. That 908/3 was unbelievable! I was watching it through big bend and the way it would turn in and change direction mid turn didn't look possible. It was just leaving the Penske Lolas, Brian Redman's Chevron, and that BEAUTIFUL 512 in the dust. Those RS's weren't doing bad either...my friend kept saying "shouldn't those Ferrari GTOs be able to catch those Porsches?" Did you notice the driving position of the guy in the 512s? He had his head cocked so far to the left to fit into the roof bubble that it looked like he was asleep. He must have a permanent crick in his neck. Did you happen to see the Green Dragon? What a monster, the wheels were 4x36!! I'm not sure if that is the original Barney Oldfield car or a repro. Averaged 60mph in 1904. I saw John Fitch, George Follmer, and David E. Davis checking out the cars (not together). I think that Friday is the day to go - no crowds. Nothing like the sound of 25 or so 60s & 70s Trans Am cars circulating, unless it's 25 Can Am cars. And yes that TZ was amazingly fast. Dr Kamm strikes again.

Sounds like I missed a good event. It has been almost 8 years since I was last to LRP for the Fall Vintage Festival and I keep meaning to get back. One day soon ...
I did attend the Rennsport Reunion last year and for lap time comparison, 962's were turning the fastest laps at 54.387 and 56.014 seconds respectively. If the 908 you are referring to was Martini #4 his best lap was 56.643 seconds. Two surprises to me were an '87 944T at 55.501 and a '70 914 at 56.152 seconds. All of these times are from the official race results which I picked-up in the scoring tower. Anybody know what the lap record is at that track?

Sam Posey was the guest of honor. He was the first to lap the track in under a minute, 30 years ago. Didn't catch what car. I think the 911s were in the 1:05 range. A 45-second lap must be something to see.
BMW is the new major sponsor, and they really did a great job. The whole car and motorcycle lines were there, plus a full selection of Minis, plus a collection of great past bikes and past racecars (M1, 1600TI, 3.0CSL, etc.). And a 3-course sit-down dinner Friday night for at least 600, drivers and crew.

The lap record was set by Fangio the younger
or PJ Jones in Dan Gurney's GTP Toyota.

The LRP track record:
43.112 seconds/ 128.595 mph P.J. Jones, Toyota MK III GTP, 1993. Looks like I only have to shave off 23 seconds to beat that! Maybe if I don't brake in the downhill. JFC
