What do you think of this RS clone?
OK... you guys missed my birthday (April). All will be forgiven is this is delivered to my doorstep in the next week or so.

Nice, from what the pic's show.
My question is why the owner stopped at a 2.5 ltr........ For what he was trying to accomplish, upping the disp to 2.7 couldn't hurt that much $$$ wise, from a "big picture" standpoint. Power wise he has more of a 7/8th's RSclone, IMHO. I'd hate to be in a pack of RGruppe RS's & RS clones with that car..... Just a gut feeling. |
It's a good looking car from the pics, but they don't show much.
But I have to rant a bit about this strut brace in the car http://images.traderonline.com/img/1...2217796_11.jpg This is very poorly designed and actually hurts the geometry. The diagonal brace is connected to the main brace, maybe 1/4 in from the strut tower. The diagonal is supposed to make the towers rigid through triangulation. Instead this design causes the main brace to bow under corner loads (either up or down depending left or right turn). Bowing the brace CHANGES the camber by pulling the towers together. The diagonal should have been tied directly to the tower, not on the main brace. |
Looks awfully nice to me. If that 2.5 is a short-stroke using high-compression 90mm pistons with that MFI system, I'll bet it screams in that lightweight chassis! -- Curt

Why a 2.5
Probably started with a 2.0 or 2.2 and didn't want/couldn't afford to change the crank/rods when he redid the motor. Also I would think that if you limited the size to 2.5 you might be able to get away with using a 2.4S MFI setup and not have to pay for an expensive rebuild of the Injection Pump. A 2.5 is what I was looking at doing for my car when I rebuild it next winter, but I have notice that Andial has 2.9 93 MM P/C sets, if I used one of those with the 2.2 crank I'd get a 2.7 shortstroke motor, hmmmmmm |

If you already own the 70 Pcar and it happens to be a coveted "S"model, the motor transformation to the 2.5 configuration alone would cost you around $10,000.00. Do the arithmetic, sounds like a very good opportunity for someone to be an Rgruppe member. The 70-71 model early car were the lightest (weight) stock car Porsche produced. I believe they started at 1020kg's, which was lighter than the RS (73)...

Hold on guys.. don't rag on it because it "only" has a 2.5 motor. The internals could be a nice mix of ingredients that yield more power than a 2.7. Sure, the car has some faults, but if the rest of the package is decent, at that price, it could be a very good buy.
And it would keep up with the R Gruppe. (Do any of you remember that IMSA had a 2.5 liter class where the Porsches dominated?) |

Yes we do. :) Even worse case scenario on this motor, it appears to be a 2.4S spec, except <u>more displacement.</u> That would put it at 200HP - not far off of the real RS2.7, but in an even lighter chassis. And don't forget that a "2.4" is actually only a 2.34, a "2.5" is actually a 2.52, and a "2.7" is actually only a 2.68. Not that I'm biased toward 2.5 liter motors. ;) -- Curt |

I guess the potential HP #s with all the right goodies is quite decieving, if one(me) just looks at just the displacement. So right on, Very nice RS clone Indeed. and thx guys for the education:) |

OK, so what are the specs that result in a 2.5/260? This thing has single plug ignition, so I'm guessing compression is maybe 9.5 or so. He's got S cams and heads. Where's the HP come from? I remember Otto said he could get 260 out of a 2.5 as well. -- Curt

Is it me or does it look like he removed the RPM Transducer on this MFI motor?
Is it likely he has a workaround or is it reasonable/practical to eliminate this fuel cutoff component for racing purposes? |

I can send you the recipe for the 2.5 motor if you would like Curt. I "thought" I might want to add bit of "boom" to my 70S, until reality set in about cost for engine mods. This 2.5 transformation would be in the $10,000.00 range. I then walked out to the garage, started up the Rgruppe car. Upon returning from a very agrressive freeway lap, I decided the S is what it is and to "just leave it alone".

You'd play hell replicating this car for the asking price...looks like a nice hot rod to me!
