2 projects scratched off my long list

While on vacation last week had a chance to do a couple of small projects on my 71, which included a valve adjustment and replacement of the factory air box with some Weber water shields. ( Thanks Pelican for those and Steve for your help ) After installation of the water shields I noticed a remarkable enhancement in the sound of my engine. She definitely sounds more aggressive than before and I am sure the K&N filters added at least 20-30hp. ;)
Now if I can just get these Zeniths to cooperate.

i'm sure it's breathing better now which would explain the increased power:)
is the blue all powder coated or is it paint?

Boy I love how uncluttered the early motors are.

Looks nice

Let me know if you need any help getting those Zeniths running better, I've just recently finished a total rebuild of mine along with larger venturis and jets (moved them to a 3.0) i found the Zeniths much easier to tune than the Holley 4-bbls I can rebuild in my sleep and tune by ear ;) Unless they are in serious need of a rebuild they should be pretty easy to get back into adjustment. I found the tuning procedure in the Haynes manual and a little common sense went a long way. Remember you are basically tuning SIX individual carbs to run exactly alike, everything from the linkage to the accelerator pumps need to be properly synchronized. Shoot me a PM or email if you get stuck.

Darnit Dan- I thought I was going to have a unique engine color scheme, but you have beat me to it. Actually I'll be using a darker blue, so I think we're ok. Can you describe what you did for the fiberglass shroud and the fan? I'm curious :) Thanks man, and your engine bay looks really outstanding.

Cheers,

That's a *very* striking color scheme under the lid!
IMO, it makes all the red clones out there look pretty boring.
Nice work DByers!

You need to paint the watershields matching blue! -- Curt

Thanks for the compliments. I really love driving her again.

bell & dtw- the blue is paint,. I wasnt to sure about the color but decided that it could always be changed. It was done at the time of rebuild which I didn't tackle myself. It starting to grow on me.

Blown_ that was one of the drawing factors why I bought the 71 way back when, I could actually open the lid and identify everything!

AQB- I have been reading your past posts and was going to PM you someday real soon. Thank you very much for the offer.

Curt- You really think so?

cegerer 09-07-2002 07:52 AM

Absolutely. I painted mine red with vintage Porsche crest decals. But you might consider yellow to give it that 908-look!! -- Curt

Curt, Painting them blue to match might be an option someday now that you point out that 908 look. My now retired father has to much time on his hands and wants to make some custom aluminum ones for me.
By the way your "Gray Wolf" has made my wifes and my top 5 list. She loves the red interior.
Thanks for the input.
