Changing the outer shift coupler seal
 

Can I change the outer shift coupler seal with the gearbox in place?:confused:
I put the engine and trans back in without thinking about the outer seal that is mounted to the back of the shifter floor pan box?
I am not speaking of the shifter seal on the transmission but the seal on the body behind the shifter coupler.

So you push the seal out from inside the shift coupler box?
Sorry, I removed it but it was a few years ago and I don't remember how it came out (if there was one in there).

On my 86, yes, both seals are put in place from the inside. My car has a flange that faces inward around hole the shift shaft come through. LIke Webb said, remove the coupler from the set screw side so you don't lose your adjustment. Outer seal slides inside out and down over the snout of the trans and has a fold on the big end that covers the flange. Big end of the accordion seal goes over the big end of the outer seal. I zip tied mine in place.

Tangent - When I bought my car both seals were missing. The trans shift shaft seal had a tiny leak, that ended up in that area at the back of the tunnel. Trans had Swepco in it. Whole inside of the car smelled like Swepco. Charming at first but grows old quickly. Didn't take me long to decide I wanted those seals in place. -J
