Concours Resto - Who would you use?
So, I've searched and searched but couldn't find what I was looking for. We have the first of our projects close to being ready for re-assembly/ restoration. It's an '69 E Targa. Original color Golden Green. As the title suggests I'm looking for a shop/ individual to perform a concours restoration on it. I have a "rough" idea of the costs. I'm willing to ship anywhere in the U.S. For the "right" results. It will not be a trailer queen or show circuit car, it will be driven and enjoyed. So, I'm all ears, who would you use if you were in my shoes? BTW, please don't post "do it yourself" as I don't have the time, nor skills for the perfection I'm seeking.
Thanks! |
I'm not familiar with all the options, but Paterek Bros. in NJ was well known for their work when I lived in the area. I've also seen some nice work from CPR here on the forums. Your local PCA chapter or HQ could probably point you to some as well.

I've seen some great projects on this board from TRE.
I'd think about adding checking them out to see if they meet your criteria. (I have no personal experience with them other than having ordered some parts and received good service) |
John Willhoit / Scott Hendry in CA.
Willhoit Auto Restoration in Long Beach. Scott's Independent Porsche in Anaheim. I have seen and worked on several top shelf 2.7 RS restorations they have been involved with. Both shops can handle early cars. Cooper |
Dave Dimaria at Vintage Car Works here in Denver -- practically next door to KC.
Does many early 911's, and 356's. Has done some RS60's, as well as other makes. Great guy with uncompromising standards. Vingtage Car Works |
Also talk to Jeff at Aase, in addition to the good options mentioned here.
|
Why go concourse if it'll be a driver? Seems like a waste of time and money. A good restoration should suffice.
I mean, if you're going to drive it, ensuring every detail is factory (decals, paint marks on bolts, etc.) seems like a lot of wasted shop hours. Just throwing out there, father has a restoration shop. Guess feeling conservative, even if you have the money, why? :) |
|
I like TRE. Dave is a great guy and really knows early cars.
I have seen lots of his work. He has done lots of mechanical work on my car as well. Very honest and knowledgeable. |
Auto Associates in Canton Ct. Scott is a co-owner and manager there. A great guy to work with on your project. The shop has numerous wins, including three Manhattan trophies. If you ever get the itch to race, they have a great race prep history as well. They usually have some exotic P machinery there just about any time you drop by. Friendly as hell too.

Thanks guys for the reco's so far. There's a few shops mentioned here that I hadn't heard of, so this is good!

Canepa's in Scotts Valley, Ca ...
his cars are regularly at Pebble Beach Concour ... they do excellent work ... |
It would definitely be worth calling Sports Car Restoration in Plainville, CT. They did a Rothmans 911 last year that was unbelievable.
They do incredible work. Talk to Matt or Nate. 860-793-2002 |
I'd call Peter Sorensen (PBR Restorations - (510) 787-2200) in NorCal. He's not one of the best known, but he's certainly one of the best.... I believe his knowledge to be second to none & he's also a truly awesome and down to earth person to work with (I have a car with him now).
Here's a 67 he recently completed: Porsche SWB 911 Restoration's photosets on Flickr |
Check out Road-Scholars, they do amazing work! Hans Peter Porsche brought his 356 from across the ocean to have them restore it, and then won pebble beach with it…
|
You can always ship it back to the Porsche factory. They will remanafacture the car to perfection.

ed mayo in Texas?
also look at TLG for mechanicals in north hollywood, CA and John esposito for paint. freddie hernendez |
Mann's Restoration
Festus, MO Just south of St. Louis. They may be worth considering as they are close to K.C. They restored a buddy's Ferrari 328 that was wrecked and did a fantastic job. I took a 71 targa to them for advice and they were very helpful. |

Some of the best had been mentioned, but my recommendations:
RETRO-SPORT(.com) @ Berkeley, CA. does some work that gets it right with racing flavor. Website speaks for itself ;) |
What about Freddy Hernandez(spell?). He seems to do some really nice work, and there are some threads right here that show his level of detail.
|
Jones Autowerks in San Antonio, Tx is one of the best. They have done Pebble Beach cars and several recent early RS restorations.

I second Dave DiMaria. May be the top 901 guy anywhere.

Restor 911
The only person I would consider is Ed Mayo in Euless, Texas 817-540-4939. He has won his class at Parade Comcoour or finished in the top three places each year for the past 4 or 5 years. What's even better is he has done it with a different car each year.
He also does the Tech quiz each year at Parade and there is a super article on one of his own cats in Excellence this month You could not do Amy better than ED |
I'm not familiar with all the options, http://fashionold.com/hu4i.jpghttp://interinsurances.com/huht.jpg

Do you want the big trophy? Go to Bruce, Paterak or Rhode Scholars. Stepping down a notch prices will get cheaper (not by much though) and you'll have more choices.
I'm hearing about more $20,000 paint jobs all the time. If the car needs body work it quickly jumps to $100,000. Make sure you tell the shop how much money you have. They might very well decide to turn the job down. Also plan on it taking a couple of years. Richard Newton Car Tech Stuff |
