Recommendations for New Seats for '87
I want to get some new seats (or driver's seat at least) for my '87 Carrera. Main priorities are comfort, lighter weight, appearance. The stockers are electric, and heavy. I don't plan any track days, just enjoy driving spiritedly around the countryside. I know the lollipop style is period correct for the '87, but I like the older seat look, circa early '70s. I'm going over to DC Auto today to check out used seats, but they are all pretty expensive, so I could get something aftermarket for similar money. I would appreciate opinions as to whether older style seats will look "wrong" in the Carrera. Also, will older seats fit without too much headache. Any advice or pointers welcome.

I love the 70s style seats (scheel, recrao) too.
but they dont fit a G-period 911 at all, imho. I'd try to get the early stock turbo seats (non electric). they are nearly period correct, keeping the stock look, are lighter and fit sporty enough with more lateral support.

seats
I converted my 87 from the stock electric to 80-84 MANUAL Sport Seats for all of the same reasons you listed- lighter and more support.
Yes they are easy to install, just a bolt in. Depending on the seats you get and your present FEMALE seat belt attachment, you may have to convert (center mini console seat belt receiver removed and receiver converted to inside seat base). I have one driver's side only "CORE" Manual Sport seat if you are interested. Last edited by sled9146; 02-26-2014 at 07:26 AM.. |

I went with a set of 1980 Turbo sports seats as well on my 86. Saves a ton of weight and has much more support.
The old seats had the belt receptacles built into them so I fabricated a floor mounted one. You will need to remove the belt receptacles from your old seats and use them.

I have the mid year G series Recaro sport seat for driver and standard seat for passenger. I love this sport seat and this combo. The seat is very comfortable and really locks you in place when driving hard. It isn't the easiest to get in and out of though. I've never weighed it, but I have had it out and it is not heavy at all. I've seen them come up for sale from time to time and they seem to be highly valued, as they are not cheap in the used market.

You might also consider Boxster seats. It's a little messing around to get them to fix (search here for instructions), but they look stock, are comfortable, and relatively light if you get the manual versions. I think they're somewhat readily available as well (I have seen them go for ~$400-$600 per set).

Does anyone know how the '87 rails differ from earlier (pre-'87) ones. Will this affect mounting tghe turbo seats to the '87? Appreciate all the comments.

You'll have to find the seats you find comfortable, but I'll tell you I've had Sparco Evo II seats in my 911 for 10 years or so, and I find them extremely comfy even though they don't adjust. Last year I drove from FL to CA in 30 hours, no problems at all and they are very lightweight to boot.
Even on the drive back, slower and with the girlfriend, no complaints from her either. Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 372k miles |

GTS Classics has a relatively new seat call the Club Sport. It looks like something like a forerunner of the modern GT3 seat. I am seriously considering them for my SC.

The club sports look to be about the same money as the real deal Recaros... not sure why you wouldn't just by the original.

I understand where you are coming from. The reason to buy the GTS's is that they are slightly different and that Stephan (spelling, sorry) will customize them to your exact needs.

74-80 Sport Seats. They are the best and they are pretty light. IIRC they are about 25# with sliders.

Red Recaros
These are my 80 - 84 Recaro Sport Seats.
They were recovered for me by PP, handle MARKO. for my '84 Turbo look. Beautiful Can Can Red leather with perforated inserts.... Love them. Scott
