I am struggling to get my a/c up to spec.
I will have the system checked and recharged when I get south. But there are other issues: The air flow seems less powerful than other cars I have sampled. The fan on the evaporator was replaced a year ago- is this the fan for flow into the cabin?. Could there be restrictions in the ducting/valves? Also is it standard to have 2 condensers one up front and one in the tail?. Do belly condensers really make a difference? Tons of questions I know, but this is an area where you can spend 'odles of dosh' and get no where. The PO spent $3,500 in 3 years (92-94), new compressor and rear condenser to name a few!. Florida can get pretty warm! rgds Ben |

Yes, the evaporator fan motor is what blows air through the center vents. You might want to check and see if the motor housing is properly mounted on the evaporator to make an air tight seal. How 'bout that excuse for a flex duct connector that is clamped to the evaporator fan motor outlet and the duct housing going into the cabin? If it was like mine, it has deteriorated and is probably torn and not sealing well. Replace it with anything you can get your hands on that will fit and seal properly-preferably something with a slight insulating property. BTW: $3500.00 for a/c repair on your car is, how should I put this, A BIG FU*#ING RIP-OFF!!!! These kind of shops give the service industry such a wonderfull image, don't you think?

R22tech is right- A/C is far from rocket science. I am not a professional and I have got it pretty much figured out just from having mine repaired so many times on various cars. The only thing that drives price up a little,(labor-wise), is evaporator location on some vehicles if sevice needed.
One well-known Porsche parts company,(don't want to get in trouble w/ Wayne- see if Pelican has it), lists an A/C improvement kit for $50 that just has to do with air ducting on 911. If you saw the pic of it, you could definitely copy it at home, depending on DIY skills. (Chuck Moreland could probably build entire A/C system from stuff you find in the woods). |

I added the Auto air lower center vent update kit to my 84. It helps get more air out of the system. I was going to update to a later dash but thats a pain.
It worked ok for most days, except 118 days here in phoenix. If you have to park in the sun the system takes a long time to cool down again. I used to keep the system topped off every year.It gets real expensive to keep them topped up now that R12 is priced like gold. I recharged it for sale and it cost $260... ------------------ 93RSA |

When fixing the ac on the SC I used a rubber reducer coming right off the evaporator cover into a piece of PVC piping so that the hose has a nice tight fit. Then it is run directly to the vent for the dash. I'm going to have to replace all of the hoses up front as they are now cracked or non-existant on the 23 year old car. I ended up replacing the rear condensor, drier bottle, a new compressor and all new lines. This cost me less than $700, but I did all the work myself.
