1967 US Delivered 912-6 in Australia

I originally posted about this car in the 912 section, before I realised nobody uses that section!

This was deliver to me 3 weeks ago looking like this. It started life as a US delivered, blue 912. It's been here for a really long time apparently. At some stage it has had an injected 2.4L from a 1973 911E put in it. I've taken a heap of photos of how it looked on delivery, because after 3 days work it already looked like a different car. So far I've pulled the seats out and given the interior a once over. Painted the Fuchs black, as they were white. The masking took 1/2 a day. Polished all the chrome.

Nice blue Recaros. You can see the grubby chrome here.

I ordered some parts from the US to fix the gear change, some new seats and a Momo boss for an old wheel I've had for ages. So not being able to do any mechanical work on it, I set about painting and polishing the Fuchs and cleaning the thing.

Masking took hours. I'd read somewhere that the trick to getting the corners right was to use electrical tape.

Then I clay barred the paint, used cutting compound on the deep scratches and Meguiars wet look polish to finish. The chrome came back with a light steel wooling. So after 3 solid days work it now looks like this. Still sporting it's US dune buggy suspension height, but otherwise vastly easier on the eye. I plan to drop the ride height by about 1 1/2 inches all round. Before I do however, it has to have a visit to a mate’s place for as little rust attention in a couple of non-visible spots. His driveway is a shocker and won't accommodate a lowered car, so it has to wait.

[/QUOTE]

Cobra RS seats from the UK, an old Momo and a lot of cleaning.

It will reside in my garage with the other one.

That looks great! The second side shot reminds me of the '67 912 I had years ago. I still miss that car for some reason.

Did you paint the wheels with or without prepping the soon to be painted areas? I'm still not confident enough to paint mine. About how long did it take to mask each wheel and what type of paint did you use? What type of tape is the red stuff?

Hope you don't mind all the questions and sorry for the hi jacking

Bob

Thanks guys.

Yeah Bob I used electrical tape for the corners. A tip, on the concave sections, cut small slits in the the tape, so it doesn't contract and peal off. I used VHT satin black wheel paint.

Good progress on a Longhood wiht great potential. You get along OK with LHD over there?

Is that the track near Ipswich I passed by on my motorcycle going to see Fishcop last year?

Yeah you can register a LHD in Queensland if it's over 30 years old.

Nah that's Queensland Raceway. I'll save my Miata/MX5 race car for there!

I'm jealous! That looks like heart-pumping fun.
I did finally develop some confidence to do the wheels.
