Early and Later Center Caps-Need Lesson
 

I am trying to decide whether or not to install center caps on my project build so having answers to the following trivial questions would go a long way........
1. I understand that the early center cap male insert into the rim measures 67mm vs 70mm for the later style. Correct?
2. Will an early style cap fit a later Fuch rim?
3. What is the difference, if any, on the face, logo, outside ring, edging, shaping, etc.?
4. When was the change-over from early to later style?
5. When were colored or painted logos first introduced?
6. Anything else that one should know?

The early cap three clips 67-73 silver clip retainer whith removable hole 74-86 black 74-86 the three clip wont fit on 74-86

Johan, I did not install centre caps on mine because to me this look is in keeping with the theme of my build

por1968, many thanks for your response. It's now clear that I have to stay with the later caps for my build.
I remember once a Porsche guru commenting to me on a pic that I had posted of an original '73 RS ( on sale for over $600k) to the effect that "those are the wrong caps for the "73 RS". Other than the clip thing that pors1968 pointed out I have not been able to determine whether the face of the cap differs in any way. Hence this thread. So my question that still remains is.... is there a difference between the face of the earlier and later caps?

wayner, that stance and wheel are truly outstanding. Those must be 17's 0r 18's by 13 wide, or more. I agree with you that no centre caps is the right look particularly for your car.
Mine will ultimately be a bit more subtle so I want to be able to possibly switch from all business to a bit more subdued. Also, while I'm working on my gravel rashed wheels (and I mean gravel rashed inside and out) which require substantial restoration and possibly will have to be painted with only a polished lip, I thought that it would be wise to do proper caps as well now, particularly for colour match. If I don't do it now, it will never be done.

P.S. I just went through your thread on your build. Truly inspiring. Can you comment on the finish of your wheels, please. Satin clear coat directly on alloy???

Thanks for the comments on my build. A lot of collective Pelican wisdom (and hours on line here learning) went into that car.

As for the wheels, I followed Jeremy's lead and had Jim at True Design build those wheels for me.
I sent Jim a set of 16" curb rashed wheels and he put 17" hoops on them so that I could run big fat modern rubber.

The finish that I asked for is a scotchbrite type finish, which I can easily maintain with a Mr. eraser (or more scotch bright pads if I really let them go).
This season I am going to experiment with some clear plastidip on them.

Got a PM from Wayner. put me on to hubcaps.com. Cannot believe the center cap variations, although, unfortunately no real ID unless you already have a part number. Nevertheless, this web site may be valuable to anybody who is looking for a replacement cap or two at a reasonable price with some assurance that its in good refurbished condition. The value of this forum, amazing....

Some details for you with two (bad) pics. This shows 70mm and 67mm caps. As you know, The 3 prongs are 67mm. When looking at the two different 3 prong ones, the 'clean' one came with a set of 15x8s that I bought used. The other was on my 15x6 flat Fuchs from my '72. Finally, the white ones were on a set of 16x7 and 16x9. I am having the 16s redone to rsr style and need to figure out how I want the center caps to look. I don't want the painted, inlayed style on the rsr finish.

arrivederci, Thanks for the pics. First time that I have seen the back side of a early cap. All clear to me now. From the pics I surmise that there really is no difference on the front. The logo and the recessed ring look the same.
May I ask which rsr finish you are contemplating?
