Question odometer

Hey guys,
my odometer quit working after I pushed the reset odo. I read the tech article about this but that was a 914. It doesnt seem to be the same as the 86 carrera. Has anybody out there repaired this or is it something I am better off to take to the speedo. shop
any input on this would be appreciatted.

jerry, i had the same prob. with mine. i took it apart(very easy) to see what was wrong. there was a brass gear that was stripped.called all the repair shops to buy the little gear and was told that they cant sell the gear separate and that they had to fix it(about 100.00)i refuse to pay 100.00 for a brass gear that i can remove and replace myself in 5 min. this subject pisses me off. screw them ill keep my (broke speedo)before i give anyone 100.00 for a brass gear that actually cost less than a dollar.just my .02, im so mad that ill buy another speedo before i get this one repaired, just a matter of principle to me.

Incidentally, I think I once heard that the broken-odometer-gear scenario happens as a result of trying to reset the odo while the car is under way. Or maybe of trying to do that too many times.

Yes as a matter of fact that is how it happened. I learned my lesson. I will not reset again while moving. I was just hoping to fix it without paying out to a shop.
