Gunson vs. Heathkit (The CO shootout)

I purchased a Heathkit a few months back and used it to set my CO mixture, but I had wondered how accurate it was... So a friend has a Gunson and I decided to set them both up and compare the results.

After letting them both calibrate for 10 minutes, I plugged them both into the exhaust pipe to get some readings.

After some adjustments, I settled at these readings:

The Heathkit read 2%

The Gunson read 2.3%

It was idling nicely right around 975 RPM.

So, I figured not too bad, they were within .3%. BUT, after I shut the engine off and let the units re-calibrate back to the starting point, the Gunson returned .3% lower than the calibration point, so they were in fact bang on! Pretty cool.

I must say that I prefer the nice big analog meter on the Heathkit, but both work just fine for a basic C0 reading IMHO.

I took the car for a nice long drive and it was running really nicely.

Very nice review. Would be nice to also have a WideBandO2 comparison, like the LM1 just to see how close the WideBand is in AFR vs CO.

I'm into testing and comparing an LM1 if anyone has one in the Vancouver (Surrey/Langley) area.

I too would like to see the correlation between CO and AFR.

It is interesting to see CO meters used. Really old school......and interesting to see Heathkit being used.

I really wonder how these museum piece units measure up to modern AFR instruments.

I have and AFR permanently installed in my 1973 2.7 MFI car and it has been wonderful in making the MFI REALLY work!! I also find it is good to have it working all the time and be able to download the data and study it.

The correlation is pretty straight if your are using CMA manual.

Good for setting idle mixture. Not so good for road testing (response time).

How's the Heathkit in that regard?

Interesting.... I didn't know Heathkit made these. My dad has a ton of Heathkit amateur radio equipment... most all of it Heathkit green.
