engine drop, where the heck does that wire go ???

It's been a while since i did an engine drop (probably 6 or 7 years) and i don't remember a wire going to the alternator needing to be disconnected.

Old-timers?

Anywho I'm dropping the tranny with the engine this time (first time I've done that) so the engine is dropped cept for that pesky wire that somehow got electrical taped into the engine harness, it looks like it goes to the alternator but I've got some unwrapping to do to make sure.
Anyone know which wire I'm taking about and does it go to the alternator?

I traced it back to the firewall and up to the rubber block that fits in the slot on the forward right side sheet metal.

I hate messing with the wiring on the back of the alternator, it's harder when you wear a size 16 wedding ring ;)

Then I still got to disconnect the reverse wiring on the tyranny, and the speedo drive. I'm assuming it's mechanical right?
Haven't found that yet.

Ran out of steam today, I'll get back after it tomorrow.
Sure seems like it was easier to do stuff like this when i was younger and still has two good lungs.

there are at least two wires and the ground from the alternator. there are a bunch of brown wires that ground to the alternator from the CIS system that i no longer have. as i recall there is a black and red wire, then the braided ground strap that is painfully too short that grounds to the block.

Sammy,

What year/car are you working on? Could you post a picture of the wire? Thanks.

It's a 911 SC, 1980.
The wires went to the alternator and they're off, not as big of a deal as I remembered. Had to think for a while about if the fan belt nut was right or left hand threaded.

Now it's time to dive back under and find that speedo drive and reverse wire, then
It'll be out.

OK, on the passenger side of the tranny just behind and above the CV joint and near the starter, there's a wire that goes into the tranny.
It looks like it goes into some sort of round plug, maybe 1 1/2" diameter. It has two ears on it like it needs some sort of special wrench. It isn't shown on the PET diagrams.

What the heck is it and how do I get it out?
I already removed the bolt above it.

EDIT: it's above and slightly IN FRONT of the passenger side drive shaft output shaft.

After some serious searching, I found this:

That's it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1394644186.jpg

Nuther picture. Now to just figure out how to get that plastic plug out without destroying it.

Magnetic Speed Sensor........

After removing the bolt and spring wire, carefully pry it out. I usually leave this thing there and just disconnect the connections by the shift coupler (inside tunnel).

LOL i just did that. Disconnected the plugs and pulled it through the firewall. Thank you.
Piece of cake and didn't break anything. Lost an hour tho.

Next question, how do i get greasy fingerprints off a keyboard? ;)

That is what the blue glove are for...

I usually forget to put them on when I start working but always remember to put them on before Pelicanting for help :D

That is the sending unit for the speedometer. Just remove from the tranny and hang it out of the way. Don't forget to unplug the reverse light switch at the very front end of the transmission right where the shifter shaft enters.

cmonref 03-12-2014 01:04 PM

The reverse light switch does not need to be unplugged to get the engine out with the transmission attached. That wire is in the engine harness. Save that disconnect for when the engine and trans are sitting on the pallet.
