Door check problem

Does anyone know of a fix for the door check attachment in the door when it rips loose?

Start here.

A picture of how it looks would help.

There is a Weltmeister door check reinforcement kit available. It consists of 2 thicker triangular metal plates that essentially sandwich the torn/damaged sheet metal inside the door. It also includes 2 slightly longer bolts for mounting.

I recently installed this kit on a client's '76 Targa.

The door was badly damaged.

The other challenge we encountered is that the access hole in the door jamb area outer sheet metal changed over the years. The Weltmeister kit pieces will not fit into the earlier doors without some cutting for access.

We ended up removing the door and TIG welding the torn sheetmetal, plus cutting a 3" access "slice" to put in the reinforcement. Next we installed the new check strap to square everything up and tack welded in the reinforcement.

Last we welded up the access "slice".

The inner door shell required some minor paint work in the jamb. Outer door skin was fine.

Definitely a bigger project than expected!

If you have later style doors with bigger "triangle" access holes where the check strap passes through you can use the "string" method to help position the reinforcement pieces and bolt them in.

Good luck with your repair. Well worth the effort to avoid external sheetmetal damage to door or fender!

Thank you both for the information. I now have the courage to attempt this and will share pictures as it happens.
