911SC Tire Recommend?

I've been worried about the age of the tires on my 1978SC. (Dunlop SP Sport 8000). Finally checked and they are 1998 and 2002 date codes!

Lowered to Euro specs. Currently the sizes are:
Fuchs 6x16 205/55 Front
Fuchs 7x16 225/70 Rear

I've looked at a lot of older threads and most people are looking for track tires. I need a set of tires for a fair weather, weekend driver.
Stick with those size tires?
Recommended brand and model?

Yikes .... get rid of those tires immediately before they disintegrate and leave you stranded !!!
The proper size for your wheels is 205/55/16 front and 225/50/16 rear although the choice in 16 inch tires is diminishing !
Dunlop Direzzas are a good value for the dollar and a great tire as well ...

Cheers !

For everyday use, you should look at BFGoodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S tires. I use them on my car for non-track days and they are great: DFGood traction, nice ride, acceptable NHV; and a nice price.

I did some google searches and found good stuff on both tires. Thanks. As a bonus, they are MUCH less than I was expecting to pay. Bonus!!

I know, scary old tires. It wasn't until I noticed no tire receipts in the records that it got me wondering. But no tread wear lulls you into a false sense of what is acceptable.

Any idea why the previous owner went with such a taller profile tire for the rear?

I was in the same boat and just got a set of Khumo Ecstas. I rather like them.

I got the same tires only in 15" size, Tire Rack has a Great price on these. Shipping was less than 2days and then find a local shop to mount them !! Still trying to see when they lose grip.

I was talking to my local tire dealer about these, and he stated that his customers love this tire, but they seem to have a disproportionate amount of them coming back with bubbled sidewalls.

tirebuyer has free shipping? Excellent info.

Any advantage to keeping the rear size at 225/70 (PO installed) or going back to the 225/50 original spec?

Dunno but when you go to a smaller (stock) rolling diameter, the speedo will read correctly and you will be able to accelerate quicker due to a shorter overall gear ratio.

I have a set of Dunlop Direzza Star Specs, and I'd also used a set of Yokohama S Drives on an '82 SC. Both were very good tires, and a huge improvement over the older tire. The Yokohamas might have had a little bit more forgiving sidewall, which was helpful on poorly maintained back roads. The Dunlops are great all around tires, but I don't put that many miles on them in a year.

A good reason to get them locally as opposed to Tire Rack.

I recently went with the Hankook Ventus V12 evo from Tire Rack and have been very pleased. Not only were they inexpensive, but I got an $80 rebate as well!

Hankook Ventus R-S3

I put Hankook Ventus R-S3 tires 205/55ZR16 Front and 225/50ZR16 Rear on my SC (lowered to a little below Euro ride height) last summer, good grip, very reasonable price from The TireRack.

X2 for the Yoki S Drives; very good all around tire.

BTW, my '82 SC came with what appeared to be pretty new tires, only 3000 miles on them, but 7 years old. First week I had them the 2 front's separated at 70 mph.

Get rid of those quickly!
