Was rear swaybar mount failure the reason I crashed ? (video)
porsche 911sc broken swaybar mount crash - YouTube
Porsche 911 sc 1980, followed by BMW E30 with 3.5 engine, Porsche on Toyo R888 on second run, sticky warm tires, totally surprises the driver, What do you think happened. 2 days later while adjusting front toe in (it was 0,20 out) I discovered common to 911sc failure - rear left sway-bar mount broken. I did about 10 laps this day, and not even once the car surprised me like this. |
What crash, the yellow car that spun off?
|
I have broken a drop link and ripped the mount. When I broke the link it was obvious something happened. Sudden shift in balance and a little bit of quick steering to catch it. Balance shifts to understeer.
When the mount broke, years later, I did not really sense it. Just part of managing traction I guess. Car got sloppy and understeer increased. So, IMHO if it happens when your suspension is loaded up, and you are working the tires, yes, sudden change will upset the car, and may catch you out in a big way. |
Looking at the yellow car, it (you?) was hanging the tail out pretty far. Got a little too far and the car snapped back. So this could be the explanation.
Or it was already broken and you were compensating for the understeer by over rotating. Then classic swap ends when you got too far out and tried to stop the rotation. Either way, breaking the mount sucks. Glad to hear it wasn't too serious. |
I'm guessing you lifted whilst the car was pitched out... This will produce the same effect shown in the vid.

Why would anyone race their 911 with the stock mounts in place? Not trying to be a smartass, but these are well known failure points.
|
The BMW driver called you a few tasty degrading words and described your driving skills as less than worthy.
|
Yeah, but he's a drifter.
|
Swaybar had nothing to do with that:
|
Drifter for sure....screaming like a school girl
Loving your 3.6 conversion ! |
Speaking of rear sway bar, any tips on getting the bushing on? I have tried grease and pry bar, but no go ( I have also tried cursing and yelling). BTW, why does the drivers side mount look totally different?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1394896422.jpg
Any help would be great:D |
With wheels off and car on stands I used a 6' crow-bar, properly wedged, to pop them on. Actually was very easy.

The guy following you put a Polish curse on you.
|
i think it could be the reason why you crashed. but it would make alot more sense if it were the passenger side that broke
