hard shifting with a back seat full of girls

Last night went to dinner with friends. Friends wife wanted to ride in the shiny red car. The wives are small enough to fit in the back seat so off we went.

In addition to some wheel rub from the 255/17's I noticed a real difficulty shifting into first. I have been chasing the stiff shifting in 1-2 since I got the car. Replaced shift bushings and used the coupling whisperer bushings for the coupler. While better it still isn't guaranteed to shift in to first at every attempt. Then last night was the first time I've had people in the back seat.

So any idea what the new symptom might be telling me?

I figure on trying to adjust the coupler once again.

FWIW, first time I jacked up the rear of the car, I did notice that the engine mounts seemed good. No play between when the engine started lifting and the rear of the car did too.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

There might be some body flex with the additional live load.

The flex could cause amounts of misalignment in the shifting assembly.

More likely is the transmission changing position because of the added stress/weight. I would look at transmission mounts.

Also look at your rear drop links, one of mine was disconnected, which lead to me replacing both. The sway wasn't really noticeably unless I had passengers in the back, or a heavy dude in the front. This however never affected the shifting.

Tranny Mounts, He said tranny mounts, he he he.

OK I guess I have an issue with shifter alignment so I'll look into that.

With a nod of respect and a polite golf-clap of approval toward the most excellent tranny remark (smirk-smirk), I would also suggest that the mounts could be the focus here. I changed the mounts in my 87 a couple of years ago and I swear I could feel a slight improvement. I was wondering if the vertical alignment had anything to do with it.

As a test, I suppose to you could remove the rear tunnel coupler cover, and load up the weight in the back seat to see if the coupler/shaft was raised or rubbing against the body.
When you jacked things up, you kind of removed the issue, so the problem might not be visible anymore.

While receiving some friendly rubbing from the wives I noticed a real difficulty shifting the activities past first. I have been chasing this "stiff" problem since I turned 40. Maybe the problem was compounded because last night was the first time I've tried to have two people in my "back seat".

So any idea what the new symptom might be telling me?
This might be an indication that it is time for you to try out the little blue pill (and/or some different "positioning")!

if I had a back seat full of women, I would gladly take the stiff shift trade-off.

I think we need pics of the cargo to determine the issue.

Heck I have two bathtubs full of pills and it was not quite enough to make things shift into the next gear.

But this is my half of the load in the backseat.

So you had trouble getting it into first?

I think I'd have hopped into the back with the girls and tried to get it in.

I see a disturbing trend in this thread.

Ha - right, a 911 full of wemmens (that actually fit in the back of a 911) = more than just a stiff shifter I would think!
