Hoist / lift table owners

I have a Bend-Pak MD-6XP that I bought after reading what folks here and on other forums were using, and used it this weekend to change the oil in my transmission. I noticed that in the direction I had the hoist facing, with the rams toward the engine, that I wouldn't have much room to get a jack in to remove the engine or do other things, so I turned the hoist around 180 degrees. The next time I went to lift the car, I thought I was in the same points I had used to pick it up before, referring to the photo of the underside of the car with the 'X' marks on it, but I think I missed somehow. I had to get something out of the car and when I opened the driver's door, it wouldn't close again, so I put the car back on the ground immediately and then the door closed correctly. My car has the 964 rockers on it, and I really can't tell where the jack point is, so I am not sure of the reference point for the lift.

I don't really want to be 'that guy' asking all the stupid questions, but as I am a little paranoid now of screwing something up, what's to stop me from putting a 'deck' of 2X6 lumber for example on top of the main part of the lift where the extension arms are now, thus making my hoist into a lift table?

I think it might serve the purpose of both making raising the car easier and giving a worktable surface when not being used as a lift. Crazy?

Nice hoist! Good choice.

I wouldn't worry too much. The floor in front of the back wheels and the floor just behind the front wheels, and watch out for the oil lines. The rest don't worry. These are very stiff cars and you won't do any harm.
