1980 911 sc has issues

Hello,

My 1980 911 sc (3.0) is not behaving and I am looking for some pointers...

First, it did not want to start. starter was turning, but car was not starting (some begining of a start, or so it fell, but not starting really).

I cleaned some fuses and put a charger on the battery on engine boost and got it to start...

It has no power in low/mid range rev, nearly no acceleration, however, at high rev, it feels ok (6000 rpm and more)...

It has lots of backfire under deceleration...

since it has been a very wet winter with lots of moisture, I tried doing some cleanup on the distributor cap, but it did not feel that it was doing any differences.

I tried disconnecting spark leads at the distributor cap while idling, but none seemed that it was changin anything to the engine noise...

I am at lost as to what to check next....
I have a hinch that it is an electrical problem, but can not prove it...
I am assuming that fuel and fuel pressure is OK as it works at high rev... but I might be mistaken...

Any pointers?
Cyrille

Maybe a vacuum leak? I'm not an expert on CIS, but there are a few of those around here.

Same on my '80 SC as well last summer... it ended up being a $12 fix.... Oxygen Relay under the passenger seat... Easy to check... get it running and then unplug it... if there is no difference in the way it's running, then that's the issue... you might be able to pull it off, scrub the plug really well, then plug it back in a notice a difference... even if that does work, I would highly recommend replacing..

Here's a link to a good discussion...

The symptoms you describe could be anything from vacuum leaks to loss of spark to cis adjustments being out of whack. If I were you I would pull the plugs and see if they all look the same. You said you can pull wires from the cap while running with no change to how the car idles? That to me would be really odd. If you're not the wrench type this could be something you want to leave to a pro, but do look at the plugs and report back.

There could be many things causing these issues. You will need to do more sleuthing here.

My first thoughts are that your air to fuel ratio is not right. There are many things that could be causing this.... including vacuum leaks and/or O2 sensor issues.

Start by doing the standard CIS adjustments to zero in these levels. Then, if this doesn't fix it, try listening to the base of your intake manifolds and injectors with a 3' piece of spare fuel line hose while it's running. Listen for air leaks. Let us know what you find.

Try to verify the fuel pump connectors. Maybe they have not good contact in their holes

Took gently apart the blades with a knife to improve contact then insert the piece in his plug again

I think this small device will be an important and commonly neglected maintenance to do if you never considered this particular in the past

I have ONE word for you: "BRAVO"!!!!!

Thanks! that was it! I found another similar relay (with only 1 output instead of 2, but I just soldered the 2 cables together and off it goes!

I had similar problems with rough running and hard starting. It was the O2 relay under the passenger seat.

Apologies for bumping an old thread up but I'm looking for the O2 sensor relay for my 80 SC as well and can't seem to find it on our host's site.

Does anyone have the part number or a link to where it is?

Thanks!

Scratch that, found it! Wasn't under 'Relays' in the catalogue - go figure.
