Threaded Transmission Mount & Cup Washers - What to do?
Hi Guys,
I have been doing some work under the car and had the transmission mount off, with a jack stand supporting the transmission. Ive gone to re-install it tonight and with a bit of luck have threaded the hole in the body . I even had the nuts attached to the transmission loose and threaded the mount bolts by hand first. The strange thing is that when I took them off I commented to myself that they came off really easily.I have done a bit of searching and want to do the Time-sert inserts, as the thread has come out on the bolt. I would like to know if this is the correct kit, in particular the insert is 16.2mm long and whether this is long enough? Also - a strange question - when I took the mount off there was a cup washer on the top of the mount (between body and mount) and a cup washer underneath the mount? Is this correct as the diagrams in the Bentley Manual indicate the washer underneath only, however there is a quantity of 4 called up in the PET. The car is a 1979 SC with a sporto transmission. I believe the washer sandwiches the rubber within the mount.
Can't help you with the time cert however. :-( Todd

i would try to run a thread chaser first (not a tap, which cuts threads, but a chaser which cleans them up). i got some on amazon.com that worked for me in that situation.

Thanks, when I took the bolt out, the threads from the hole came with it in one piece. It looked like a spring when I took it off the bolt. Did this happen to you before you used the thread chaser? I have to have a look but I'm assuming the hole is completely stripped.

I did something similar last year, had to go from a 14mm (got to love those PO's) down to 12mm. I'll need to check my e-mail (maybe at work) to see what I got. In the end, while I did not bough mine from Time Sert, they were outstanding about telling me which kit I needed. They answer the email in less then 4 hrs. Contact them, tell them its for a Porsche, the depth of the present hole and dia. (obviously 12mm) and they will tell you which kit you need. The insert has to be shorter then the hole as the insert will "unroll" the last 2 thread out to lock the whole thing in place.

Sounds like you pulled a previous helicoil out of the hole. Get a timesert and be done with it.

It has already been repaired once. The helicoil backed out. I would go the time cert route too. C |
