Starting 911 that has sat for 8 years
Folks I am back, did my first post in 1999 but stopped in 2006 after I quit messing with my frankenstein 911 and dealt with starting a new business, kids etc.
I did not put in any additive in my gas tank for storage etc since I was pissed that it was not running right after spending hours trying to solve my CIS, lean running issues. I rolled it out of the garage and ![]() put a battery in and it turns over, put no squeel from the CIS etc. Has anyone gone through the process of restarting 2.7 911 that has sat for a long time. Thanks. |

Start-up after a long hibernation........
If this is my car I would do the following:
1. Fully charged the battery. 2. Do a change oil. 3. Drain old fuel using the return fuel line to the gas tank. 4. Fill in several gallons of fresh fuel. 5. Test run the FP for 5 to 10 mins. with the 6 fuel injectors pulled out. Collect the spent fuel from the injectors. Install back the injectors. 6. Inspect your spark plugs, wire, etc. 7. I would turn the crank manually several revolutions. Then crank the engine a few times with the FP relay and ignition coil disconnected using the starter. Install them back. Take a deep breath and turn the ignition switch. It should start (hopefully). Keep us posted. Tony |

There's a really good chance that your fuel distibutor is going to need to be disassembled and thorough cleaned.

FD purging.......
Quote:
Matt, Not necessarily. Step #5 would do the trick of cleaning and purging the inside of the FD and fuel injectors. I've done this procedure so many times with good results. Tony |

Tony,
I didn't say it was a sure thing. Just making sure that he knows what he may be in for. Obviously he would want to consider that after he goes through the steps you outline.

Matt, you could be right.........

Matt, Your comment was good and you could be right. There is a good probability the plunger could be stuck after sitting for 8 long years. Tony |

Thanks for the responses guys, good to see the BBS is still popping after all these years. I will start the process this weekend and let you know the progress. The fuel pump was just replaced when i parked and I don't hear it buzzing now, i will check the fuse and the wiring to make sure its working to push the old fuel through.

I'd consider pulling the fuel pump and cleaning it out. You're going to have to drain the tank anyway.

What I found on my '79SC, 50k mile car after a 16 year hibernation with 1/2 full tank is this:
The tank had a lot of brown almost solid fuel gunk at the bottom. The tank nylon mesh fuel filter was completely clogged and destroyed. The fuel in and out pipes of the tank were clogged solid. The fuel pump was frozen shut. This is what I did to get the car back on the road: Cleaned out as much of the brown gunk off the bottom of the tank as I could. Replaced the nylon mesh tank fuel filter. Cleaned ou the in and out fuel pipes of the tank until compressed air blows through there easily. Replaced fuel pump. Then, of course, new engine bay fuel filter, new engine oil, new transmission oil, just normal routine stuff. That was 3 years ago. Car runs like new ever since.
