I may have an opportunity to buy a nice '93 RS America. I currently have an '87 Carrera, which is in perfect condition, cosmetically and mechanically. I love my car, but I'm getting more interested in track events, and I thought the RSA might make sense. More power, better suspension, no sunroof (I'm 6'4" and have lots of trouble fitting in the '87 with my helmet on - the sunroof takes up lots of headroom). I know there were a few problems with early 964s, but by '93, it seems they were worked out. I really enjoy the '87 on the track - it sounds and feels great - very plugged in. What do you guys think about moving to the RSA?

Drive one extensively before you purchase! I am of the belief that the American, (not to be confused with the European model) Rs had few improvements beyond the stock C2's. It had many appearance upgrades, but few performance. The European had a greatly increased output(around 300hp?). So what you are asking is should you choose a C2 over a late 3.2 which has been argued infinitum. I have never had problems passing these cars in the DE's I go to, which, I realize, is a very poor way to judge them. They just didn't impress me enough that I wanted to junk my car and own one.

Well...
I recently made the switch from a 84 to 93RSA. I love this car. Mine has a few mods which makes the stock to stock comparison hard, but... I was specifically looking for something to autoX that would still be a street car. As soon as you get into the later C2/4 you are forced to have power steering (yuk). The steering is heavier and tight manuvering is not as easy as a 87. The car is much more connected than a C2, and many of the ones you will find have additonal equipment added. Also the 93 platforms were almost all built on 92 cup car shells with reinforced welds and rolled rear fenders, giving you added stiffness and just a touch more room under the rear. The sport seats are lower than the 87's which should give you a touch more headroom, the side bolsters are great in a turn. The RS euro's are rated with an additional 10 hp, but they are stripped cars with less weight, more like a 88 clubsport. With an exhaust and intake box change you can easily make up that difference and add a few HP. Plus the AC actually works!!!! Do look out for: 1.Dual mass flywheel-must be changed 2.Distributor belt/Vent-the vent must be added and the belt changed every 75K. 3.Excessive valve guide wear-have it checked in your PPI. You can check out additional info at www.rsamerica.net It also dosen't hurt that with only 701 of them made, they are somewhat of a rarity. hope this helped. ------------------ 93RSA |
