Wow. Shocked at the amount of airflow...
 

I finished the install of my oil cooler fan last night. I used a Flexalite 106, 6.5" fan. I have one of those oil cooler ducts that replaces the marker light on the passenger side. I can actually feel the suction at the opening. As well, the amount of air that is coming through the cooler/out of the wheel well is very strong. I dont know why, but I did not expect that kind of airflow.

My car (3.2) stays pretty reasonable - maybe 225 on a hot day. The fan was added as a precaution, as I want to drive it more this year - and my commute is all stop and go for close to an hour.

Bring on the summer!

I installed a fan on the front oil cooler on my 1985 Carrera. Of course helps a lot in slow speed driving. I did discover that in extreme heat even at highway speed it helps cool the oil.

On my trip back from Savannah, GA to Oklahoma a few years ago it was brutal HOT outside. Triple digits the entire time. Driving west into the afternoon sun made the AC system struggled but we stayed comfortable.

I had heard that at highway speed the fan was not needed. I turned off the fan (mine is just a toggle switch) and saw the engine temp slowly go up. I turned it on and it slowly came back down. I am talking 30 minutes for either change. I decided to do a test. I would run for 40 minutes with the fan off and 40 minutes with it on while driving 70 to 75 MPH in 105+ heat. There was indeed improved oil temp with the fan running. I did that test twice and the results were the same.

I left the fan running for the rest of the day. :cool:

You will see a big improvement in stop and go traffic.

I am sorry - I did not even think to take any pics. My car is a 1977 with a 3.2. It came with a Lemke Turbotrol cooler mounted in the stock/carrera location. Here is what the cooler looks like: (not my actual)

the fan was the smallest I could find - 6.5" fan size and 7.25" at the mounting ears:

The fan fit the cooler like it was made for it - absolutely perfect. Per the picture of the cooler, There is a frame around the entire thing. There was just enough room to fit/slip the mounting T straps between the frame and the cooler plates. That placement just happened to match up perfectly with the fan mounting ears. I am really pleased with how stock the whole thing looks.

I used a rear wiper switch the in open dash slot next to the speedometer to turn it on and off. I also replaced my "OXS" light with a very similar looking blue panel light as an idiot light to remind me when it's on. Again, it looks very stock.

One more project off of the list!

Now its time to go after those rear sway bar bushings.......

Add'l confirmation that fender-mount coolers need add'l airflow assistance.

Agree to all of this. When the stock fan gave up the ghost on my old 89 Targa, I added a spal fan and a switch, huge improvement, stop and go, and even noticed it on highway.
