80 sc valve adjustment

I am in the process of getting everything ready to a well needed valve adjustment in my 80 sc. I have lined the crank mark with the Z1 mark on the engine and also the dist. rotar with the mark on the distributor housing so that the rotar is pointing in the direction of #1 cylinder. The distributor mark mark and the rotar do not line up exactly when the z1 mark is lined up. I have read that if # 1 cylinder is in compression mode, you can giggle the rocker and you will get a little movement. This works fine with the exhaust valve but I can not seem to get the same movement out of the intake. Any suggestions? Thanks

If you cant giggle #1 intake or exhaust and youre on a running TDC, youre valves are too tight.
You wont necessarly line up perfectly because the timing spec has 5 degrees BTC.

If your distributor rotor is pointing at #1 (I think roughly 1:00 oclock) and your at TDC as flat6 stated you should feel a little play on the intake and exhaust rockers. When adjusted correctly you should be able to slide in your feeler gauge and feel some resistance. As others have stated, it's not rocket science and no different than any other OHV engine. If they're tight than you need to crack your jam nuts just enough to turn the adjuster anti-clockwise. Plenty of threads on the subject. Good luck, Warren

It is not necessary that the distributor rotor lines up with the mark on the housing when on TDC. Someone may have installed the distributor off by one or more teeth and compensated for that by turning the distributor or even by repositioning the ignition wires. Just a thought.

That's why I said approximately 1:00 o-clock. The point was that it shouldn't be pointing at 7:00 o-clock as that would indicate that you were on the exhaust stroke not compression, Warren

The notch should be between the 3:00 and 4:00 o'clock position.

If you look at page 280-11 in the Bentley it sure looks like 1:00 o-clock to me although if you turn the book 90 degrees clockwise it would be at 4:00. Warren
