I am doing top end rebuild for head studs. 48k miles on motor. during tear down I found this. left side looked normal. right side looks like this. motor ran fine when pulled. chain seems tight what kind of issue am I looking at.

If was running fine and chain tight somebody cut off one link.
|
will I know more once I get it all apart? can you measure the chain ?
|
It something wrong normaly with a tensioner like this one you have bent valve or poor running.Check the chain if there master link. But i dont realy know how it was running good with this tensioner.
|
Any update.

when I say runs good I mean I was getting a little back fire from the exhaust because of broke head studs.
how can it be a bent valve. you have two gears and a chain? can you have a bad tensioner and no motor damage? this weekend I will pull more of the motor apart. I hope I will know more. |
i can't imagine that both sides of the chain are still tight.
|
Carrera tensioners are not an upgrade.
You have the best setup IMHO....and the tensioners are serviceable....Send them out for a rebuild and install collars for insurance. I do the service as well as Supertec Performance. |
update....I took apart the side with the bad tensioner. cam, rocker arms, heads and pistons all look good. the head nuts were not all that tight.
I started this tear down for head studs. all studs are ok but had two nuts back off. I still plan to replace the studs. I am going to stop at the short block. I have Aulsil pistons so I plan to pull p&c togeather. I guess I got really lucky. and the chain is ok and right size. |
The back fire was probably from timing due to bad tensioner. How was your head gasklet.
