What's wrong with this picture

I'm attempting to fix my driver's side mirror that at the moment is spinning freely from the base. After taking the internals out and pulling the housing away from the door, it looks like the threaded bolt has come out of the mirror housing. It looks like there's a spring that the bolt goes thru, but I cannot for the life of me compress the spring enough to push enough slack in the bolt to get it to thread into the upper housing. (See photo) There's really not a while lot of thread on the bolt to even get it started. Any help is appreciated.

I cleaned it up well and removed one of the washers/spacers ..added some loctite and back together it went..I tried for days to get that spring to compress but finally gave up.

You will probably need to remove the pins from the plug

Been a couple of years and no issues due to removal of small part and no repeat performance either!

I just finished painting my mirrors which required full disassembly. You will need to pull the pins out of the connector and remove the mirrors from the car to reassemble. The bolt rquires a 12point bit to tighten, don't remember the size. Warren

I tried to do that but I guess when mine popped it took the last threads with it so some modding was necessary..man that spring is tightly wound

Had the same few threads gone on mine as well. Split/removed the nylon washer on the end. Gave me enough slack to wind back into the unit and then try to re-seat the washer. (not sure if that was actually accomplished or not) .... back on the car and works

a wide tip slot screwdriver next to the wire loom. 1/4 turn at a time. push hard and hope to catch a thread.

Go slow and be careful not to mash any wires.

I have also used a ball end Allen key. This mashes the wires some, but worked great.

I have also completely disassembled a few sets of mirrors.
