Question '70 Shifter/clutch help.. :(

Hello, I have the factory purple manuals, read through Wayne's book, looked on here. Looked on web in general. Lots of discussion about how to setup clutch cables and shift linkages- and I followed them all. Basically, put the gearbox in neutral, move to right stop, move tranny link to far left, tighten.. My car is a 69, but I have one of those kooky 70 gearbox/clutch setups. I have adjusted THAT cable to factory manual too.

But I am confused and now depressed. The situation is this: I have a 69T which went out for a 3 month paint job and stayed 2 years Before it left, it ran, shifted no prob. The paint people only dropped the drivetrain and never separated or really touched it.

I have it back, and it looks great. The car starts and runs with no issue. I can put it in to any gear while the motor is off. However, when I try with any gear while its running.. the gears grind.. any gear. That smacks of tighten the clutch cable. I tighten and tighten, but there is supposed to be 1" of play when you pull the pedal toward the rear. There is 1 inch of play right now, but there is this major grind. If I tighten more, the fork is starting to be actuated. So.. do I just tighten this clutch cable down until no more grind despite the manual saying I'm goin too far? Or is it possible that the car sat so long there is something stuck in place in the transmission? I admit that this sounds stupid, but I am also begging for help and desperate. Any clues? Remember that it all worked fine 3 years ago and I didn't even nick a gear on changing. Thoughts?

Probably the clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel from sitting.
Readjust your clutch to spec and do a search on ways to free it up.
Here's one to start with
stuck clutch
