Is this a correct tool kit (72 911S)?

Is this tool kit correct??
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1857140183

It mentions the alternator wrench is 19 & 22mm. Is this used for the alternator nut??? I thought my fan pulley/alternator nut is 24mm. This is what I used on my '72 911T.

Jay,

It sounds like your alternator has been updated ... still have a separate Voltage regulator??? All cars used to have 22 mm alternator nuts, but somewhere in the '82 - '84 time frame (maybe '82 with integrated regulator alternators) the 24 mm nut became standard.

The kit looks as described, except that the spark plug tool doesn't look right or correct to me ... looks like a late '70s/early '80s part may have been substituted at some point.

Toolkit

That's not a 72 toolkit....a few tools may overlap into 72....

The 72 kit was the basketweave material, with two clasp closures, and similar to all the preceding 911 kits.

There should be two screwdrivers (one phillips, and one with a duck billed straight blade) and both should be red handled and scripted "10,000 volt".

The wrenches should be 8x9, 10x11, 12x13, 14x15, 17x19, open, with "selected special steel", or "drop forged steel" scripted on them, or a combination of both.

There should be a box end wrench, 19 x 22, with Chrom-Vandium scripted on it.

The plug wrench should be scripted Klein 21, and should have a knurled handle on it, with a 90 degree bend at the base of the handle where it joins the shaft...no "shoulder" (those were later), and no spring swivel on it like the one pictured.

The pliers....well, I have seen mostly a no name cross hatched handle pliers with a raised cutting edge. The raised cutting edge portion may be chromed....some aren't. The Hapewe ones I believe to be a 73 change over.

The lug wrench should be as pictured in the one on Ebay.

The fan belt should be 9,5 x 710, and if original, will have "Porsche Phoenix" scripted on it.

The fan belt wrench should be scripted P208, though I have seen a couple of correct ones with no script.

The allen head wrench may or may not have a script on it. I don't have any in my office, many at home...so from "memory", they will say "din sw 911", or some may have "klein" on them. I have seen several with no script on them at all.

regards,
Eric (avowed toolkit junkie....)

I wouldn't want to display it at a concours...differences from original abound. Though I do think Eric should take a peek at my original toolkit some day...my car was a July '72 model...I bought it during the summer of '74, and as far as I can tell, I was the first to open the tool kit. Eric's desciption is not like my kit in a couple of areas.

Eric,

I was talking to a guy at a PCA
swap who had some toolkits but he
wasn't sure which were which.

Do you know if the SC and the 3.2
kit are the same? If not, what is in-
cluded with each kit? Is there a good
reference book or website w/ this info?

Thanks

Toolkits

Paul,

I would "love" to look at your toolkit, and was hoping you would weigh in on this topic.

My comments are based on years of looking at kits in cars at various shows, collecting tools (kits)(buying and selling), and also from cars that I have owned over the last 15 years (10 early 911's), descriptions (and errors) in Brett Johnsons book, owners manuals, and the input from many other 911 owners

No comments or observations are written in stone...but I have found a lot of consistencies in my research (what year used what fabric in the toolbag etc).

Paul, please weigh in on the differences in your kit...

My interest in the kits stops at 1973, but there is a publication that lists these items. It's an "originality" book published by the same people who did the Early 911 one. Email me, and I'll get the exact name for you...I have a copy at home, and it covers the 74 to 89 cars.

regards,
Eric
