G50 grinding noise

Listers - took my '87 coupe out for a drive for the first time in two weeks. When I engaged the clutch all the way to the floor I heard a grinding noise. It sounded like gears were griding and did not matter if the car was in gear or in neutral. If I engaged the clutch 99.9% of the way to the floor there was no grinding noise. After carefully driving to the Ohio German Autofest about 25 miles away, I could not replecate the grining. On my way home no grinding. Any ideas what it could be?

The car has about 66,000 miles on it with I believe the original clutch and troughout bearing. Clutch does not slip and tranny shifts well when warm but a little notchy when cold. The tranny fluid is Swepco. Is the bearing going bad??

You could have an air bubble in your hydraulic line, though you would certainly feel the mushy pedal. When my slave cylinder went, at the very end of the ordeal, it was near impossible to shift. How far can you push the pedal before you feel any resistance? Try a slave bleed before you go all out on a clutch R&R. While Swepco is the best for a 915, I don't think it's the best fluid for the G50. I have Mobil 1 and have heard that's the best for it.

This is very strange and has never happened before. The pedal feels fine and definitely not mushy as if there was an air bubble. The grinding noise was only when I pushed the clutch peddle all the way to the floor when coasting in or out of gear. If I depressed the clutch nearly to the floor but not that last 1/4 inch, there was no noise and the gearbox shifted as normal. Lastly, after driving for 20+ miles, I could not recreate the grinding noise.

Any other ideas?

Grindiing

You can keep that from happening by adjusting the pedal stop located on the floor board panel behind the clutch pedal. There is a movable stop with two fasteners that keep it in place, over time or a heavy foot, it may need a slight adjustment. Bleeding the line would also be a good idea, it should be bled when you change your brake fluid annually. The bleed fitting is located up on top of the transmission accessable from the left side. Bleed it like you would a caliper.

QUESTION??? ON A G-50 DO YOU JUST PRESSURIZE THE BRAKE RESEVOUR AND OPEN THE BLEED VALVE ON THE CLUTCH SLAVE?
i KNOW YOU HAVE TO CLAMP OFF THE OVER FLOW= BUT IS THAT
ALL??

Yep. Gets it's fluid from the brake master cylinder. It's a bear to get to the slave cylinder with more than one hand at a time laying on your back under the car. But doable.
